From the Archives: School No. 4 Turns 100

Fort Lee's oldest public school celebrates its centennial this year.

On March 18 the Fort Lee School No. 4 PTA will celebrate the centennial of the school at an event at the Doubletree Hotel in Fort Lee.

This photo from the archive of the Fort Lee Historical Society is of students in Fort Lee Public School No. 4 in the Palisade section of Fort Lee circa the early 20th Century. Among the graduates of School No. 4 are Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich and Fort Lee Poet Laureate August Kleinzahler.

School No. 4 remains one of the few buildings circa 1911 left in the borough and continues its service to the community through the education of our children and to the wonderful aesthetic value of the building itself. The school was built in 1911, a time when the American movie industry was centered in Fort Lee and when nearby Palisades Amusement Park exploded with amusement park rides and the world's largest salt water swimming pool. School No. 4 continues to serve our community into the 21st century.
