School Board Hires New Curriculum Director

Alex Guzman, the principal of a magnet school specializing in science, was appointed the Fort Lee curriculum and instruction director Wednesday night.

The principal of one of New Jersey's science academies has joined Fort Lee as its director of curriculum and instruction – and he plans on wasting no time implementing new academic initiatives.

Alex Guzman, the principal of Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences, a magnet school, will receive $138,000 in salary for the upcoming year. His appointment was approved 7-1 by the board, with member Holly Morrell as the lone dissenter.

Guzman is scheduled to start on or before Aug. 27.

As one might anticipate, Guzman will focus on integrating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) into the classrooms.

"Student achievement is a primary goal and one that will be at the forefront of all initiatives," the former physics teacher said. "The implementation of the common core curriculum, the new teacher evaluation system and continuous integration of technology are also some other identified goals."

Guzman added: "These new initiatives have great potential to enhance learning that will prepare Fort Lee students for successful futures."

The Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences serves about 160 students. Its students score high marks on standardized science exams, state data shows.
