ReplyAnd the Fort Lee Museum is quite active. Our hours, because our curators are volunteers with the Fort Lee Historical Society, are weekends Noon to 4 PM and every Wednesday night from 7-9PM and fro groups during the week by appointment. The current exhibit on Palisades Amusement Park has resulted in great attendance and our recent book signing with Emmy Award winning writer Alan Brennert saw people standing in line to get into the museum. Visit www.thefortleehistoricalsociety.org and please come by and visit this asset to the Borough of Fort Lee.

ReplyI rarely comment on Patch re anything that refers to my employment..however I grew up in an age when public service was seen as a positive and not a negative. President John F. Kennedy spoke of the importance of public service. Tis true my salary is paid for by taxpayers but I left a job with ABC News where I made more than I am being paid in Fort Lee. However, I believe there is more important things than the size of your salary. Thus, unlike when I was at ABC News, I do not get paid for overtime and I put in much overtime on a daily basis. I am not saying this for a pat on the back, but simply to state that when in this nation did public service become a crime?

ReplyHey Tommy a very Happy Easter to you as we'll and thanks for those kind words. We will keep you posted via this column until you get back home but the month of April will most certainly tell the tale as to the survival of this last physical connection to Fort Lee's days as the birthplace of the American film industry.

First off it is the same building and not a shell of its former self. Second if its replaced by a duplex it is a negative ratable. Meaning? As in its current state no children were living in it thus no kids in the school system and a minimal amount of services required via the borough. As a duplex expect 4-6 students in the school system plus hookup of the duplex into a hundred year old sewer system etc. in five years minimum this duplex would prove a drain and a negative ratable while its conversion into a borough office and educational center and film history location would prove no impact re services. As for standing up and speaking out against duplex development I have been for well over 20 years and in fact pushed for a change in the zoning laws and still do. I totally understand your concerns and honestly respect your opinion but I also see the saving of this building as a benefit to the borough economically. And it would lead to no additional hires as our volunteer base at the Fort Lee Film Commission and the Fort Lee Historical Society will handle the operation of the building. And finally, if saved we can get funds via grants as well as in kind donations for this the last extant structure connected to our film history which has relevance on an international scope. -
