Fort Lee Boys Basketball Players Surprise Coach Surprise Coach with Video Tribute

An already special night for the Bridgemen basketball team became even more special for Coach "Z."

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Fort Lee Bridgemen basketball team was already anticipating a special night at Fort Lee High School. It was senior night and a big game against Tenafly, but a certain surprise for head coach John Ziemba added to the magic of the night. After the JV game, the team brought coach Ziemba into a classroom; he was told that he was going to be watching a video made for the seniors. Instead, it was a video honoring his own 300th win as a coach, which cam back in early January.  “He just kept saying while we were watching, ‘Where did you get this stuff?’" said assistant coach James Puliatte. “The video included certificates from his freshmen year of high school basketball, clips of his college career, newspaper articles …

Bridgemen Forward Receives Good News After Season-Threatening Injury

Boys basketball player Tonderai Mushandu's season was in jeopardy after a tough fall in a game against Mahwah.

On Tuesday night in a game against Mahwah, Fort Lee junior forward Tonderai Mushandu received quite the scare when he awkwardly hit the floor after taking a hard hit to the back on a rebound. Before the play, Mushandu, better known as Tondi, was having a great night, as his team defeated Mahwah, and he was in the midst of recording yet another double double. Things quickly turned for the worst for Mushandu as he hit the ground, screaming in pain. “When Coach Ziemba got to Tondi he told me his knee cap was completely moved to the side of his leg, and Tondi was holding it while screaming it in pain,” said assistant coach James Puliatte. “He was rushed to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.” Coach Ziemba and Coach Puliatte went to the hospital to …

Bridgemen Bowling Team Vastly Improved Since Christmas

Many bowlers have stepped up as of late for the varsity team.

Head coach Dennis Sayer has seen his boys and girls bowling teams improve with time, and four boys in particular have made drastic improvements in their games. The 3-7 Bridgemen have gotten help from three freshmen and two sophomores, who have improved their stats since Christmas, and it is not going unnoticed. “We hit a little bit of a down patch before Christmas, but their averages have really picked up since,” said head coach Dennis Sayer. Sophomores James Han and Ammad Quraishi, along with freshmen Theodore Han, Kamil Fauzi and Phil Plucinski, have all improved their averages from 15-25 points each. The younger players also look to senior Kei Kase for leadership. The team is looking to improve their record and get everything in order …

Lady Bridgemen Holiday Tournament Champs Again

The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead; Senior basketball standout Ally Long earns Athlete of the Week honors.

The Lady Bridgemen had a great week, winning the Leonia Holiday Tournament and reaching the .500 mark after a slow start to the season. In the first round of the holiday tournament on Tuesday, Fort Lee defeated Parsippany Hills, 39-33. Senior guard Ally Long had a strong performance with 15 points and 6 assists in the comeback win. Senior forward Anthe Nikolaidis finished the game with a solid stat line, including eight points, eight rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots. Fort Lee advanced to the championship game on Wednesday and defeated Leonia, the host team, 47-36, to capture the tournament title. Ally Long had 15 points while Renee Mattesich had 13 points. Senior Anthe Nikolaidis finished with eight points and 15 rebounds.  …

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen.

Football: Fort Lee fell to 2-6 on the season Friday night when they lost 28-7 at Dumont High School. Frankie Goris scored the only touchdown for the Bridgemen on a short run. “We made too many mistakes early,” said head coach Bill Straub. The team will take the field again on Friday, Nov. 4, when they visit Mahwah High School for a 6 p.m. start. Boys Soccer: The Bridgemen lost a close one on Tuesday, when they visited Cliffside Park and fell 2-1. Fort Lee’s record dropped to 9-4-1 on the season. Fumio Himeno scored Fort lee’s only goal with an assist from Ron Locker. How was your week? This is how the week went for the Fort Lee Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen high school sports teams.

Football The Bridgemen improved to 2-5 on the season Friday night, when they defeated Englewood during their last home game of the season. Fort Lee picked up the 19-0 win during the seniors’ last game at home. Frankie Goris had 12 carries and two touchdowns for the Bridgemen. Quarterback Mario Jacovino scored an 8-yard touchdown, Tyler Sanders had 13 tackles and Justin Parra chipped in with 6 tackles and 3 sacks. Head coach Bill Straub was very happy for his seniors on such a special night. “It was a great team win, and I am so happy for the seniors to get the win they deserve on senior night,” Straube said. Football Fort Lee fell to 1-4 on Thursday night when they hosted Bergen County powerhouse River Dell High School. The Bridgemen lost 59-21. Mario Jacovino threw three touchdown passes--Tyler Sanders was the recipient of two of those passes--along with a catch by Masaru Yamaguchi. Head coach Bill Straub took his hat off to River Dell. “We got beat by one of the best programs in the whole state,” said Straub. The Bridgemen will return to action on Friday, when they visit Ramsey for a 7 p.m. start. The game story for the River Dell game can be found here. Football Fort Lee fell to 1-3 on the season losing at Westwood 48-20 on Saturday night. The Bridgemen were as close as 28-20 in the third quarter, but the Cardinals wore them down. Fort Lee’s Josh Ford returned a kick for a touchdown. Senior Frankie Goris had two touchdown runs for Fort Lee and senior Tyler Sanders had eight catches for the Bridgemen. The team will return to the field on Thursday for a 6 p.m. home game against River Dell. Boys Soccer The Bridgemen soccer team won their fifth consecutive contest on Monday afternoon when they picked up a 2-0 win at Lakeland High School. Both goals were scored by Ron Locker.
