Fort Lee students, members of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) took part in activities around the national theme, “The Best Me is Drug Free.” Those activities included the formation of a “human red ribbon.”
Before Sandy wreaked havoc in Fort Lee and across the region, there was Red Ribbon Week at Lewis F. Cole Middle School. Daily themes and activities included a “human red ribbon” formation on the middle school’s athletic field to promote Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), according to middle school SADD advisor Stefanie Yundi. “We want our students to make the right choices as they become teenagers and not be peer pressured into drugs or alcohol,” Yundi said. “We want them to be strong individuals by making the right decisions along the way.” Students and staff participated throughout the event and encouraged student participation. This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme throughout the country was “The Best Me is Drug Free.” “We also …

Four field-level seats for the May 16 game against the Reds are up for grabs. Last year’s SADD-New York Mets fundraiser netted $1,500.
The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) organization at Fort Lee School No. 1 is once again raffling off New York Mets tickets—really good ones. Last year, a similar fundraiser brought in slightly more than $1,500 for technology equipment, said School No. 1 guidance counselor and SADD advisor Marisa Buonomo. Raffle tickets are $2 apiece, with the winner receiving four field-level tickets—valued at more than $250—to the game on May 16, when the Mets host the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field. “They’re great seats behind the dugout,” said Paige Soltano of the School No. 1 PTA. Buonomo said SADD is hoping the fundraiser proves to be as successful as last year’s, if not more so. She also said that success was thanks in large part to the …

The SADD fundraiser netted more than $2,800 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, far exceeding their initial goal.
Students at Fort Lee School No. 2 wanted to raise $500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society after a recent visit to the school by representatives from the organization. But they ended up doing a lot better than that, raising more than $2,800 over about a two-week period through the “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser. “They came and did a presentation for our kids and showed the difference between red and white blood cells and how chemotherapy works and how it kills the bad cells,” said School No. 2 Counselor and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) advisor Meghan Lynch. “So it really got the kids pumped.” Each class had a large box, and students would put their spare change in them—mostly pennies, but nickels, dimes, quarters and …

The November food drive brought in about 700 non-perishable items, which were donated to the Englewood Food Pantry this week
Students at Fort Lee School No. 1 collected about 700 non-perishable food items during the month of November and donated them this week to an Englewood food pantry for Bergen County families in need. Students had the entire month to bring cans of food to school, with each grade level getting a specific assignment, said School No. 1 guidance counselor Marisa Buonomo. Fort example, Kindergartners brought in cereals and grains, while first-graders brought canned fruits and vegetables and so on. Sixth grade students who participate in Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) helped coordinate the food drive, along with the school's PTA, according to Buonomo. “SADD officers, Shayna Huberman, Tommasina DiMeglio, Elijah Blumenkranz and …

The group also collected donations to purchase food cards for the Fort Lee Human Services Department.
The SADD organization sponsored a Thanksgiving food drive at Lewis F. Cole Middle School in November, which, according to organizers, proved to be a successful one. On Tuesday afternoon, SADD Advisor Stefanie Yundi of Lewis F. Cole and Fort Lee High School Community Service Coordinator Barbara Pastore filled up the trunks and backseats of their cars—with the help of custodians Robert Reyes, Joe Cappellini and Demba Mane—and delivered the goods to Epiphany RC Church in Cliffside Park. “The kids [donated food], the teachers did, and then the SADD members went around to the homerooms in the morning,” Yundi said. “We made announcements over the loudspeaker, and we had a really good turnout.” They also collected donations to purchase food cards…
