The Fight Over The Future Of A $22 Million Police Department

Six months since a study recommended sweeping changes to Bergen County Police Department, none have come.

Note: This story was published on Dec. 4, 2011 Six months after a study called for sweeping changes to the Bergen County Police Department, none of the study's central recommendations have been implemented as the fight over the future of the agency continues, a fight that has seemingly chilled the relationship of two county leaders who were allies this time last year.  Bergen County officials are currently waiting for a second report on the county police that’s supposed to be completed early next year, this one by a committee created by County Executive Kathleen Donovan. Critics - most notably Sheriff Michael Saudino, who swept into office with Donovan last November - argue the panel is composed primarily of political appointees rather …

While they disband the Bergen County Police they should also look to cut back the municpal town police department. The municpal town police are glorified security guards making $150,000 to basically write tickets. Teaneck has a excellent Police force but that is rare Englewood, Oakland and Paramus are the worse. The Police are lazy do not want to write police reports, Do absolutely nothing to …   more ›

Losing Millions, Bergen Considers Selling Its Nursing Home

Bergen could join list of NJ counties that have jettisoned costly nursing homes.

Facing a growing deficit at its health care center in Rockleigh, Bergen County is considering joining the growing list of New Jersey counties that have sold off their nursing homes. The 110-bed nursing home cost about $13.5 million to operate in 2010 and brought in about $9.7 million in revenue, resulting in a $3.8 million deficit. The numbers for 2011 aren't final yet, but preliminary indications are that the shortfall grew to $4.5 million, officials said. The gap could get even larger in 2012, especially after the state reduced Medicaid payments in October. The New Jersey Association of Counties estimates that the Bergen County Health Care Center in Rockleigh will lose another $300,000 per year as a result of the recent Medicaid cuts. “…

From Dirty Bathrooms To Tee Times, A Hotline To The County

Bergen's new constituent services phone line getting good early reviews from residents

A Fair Lawn man was worried about a dead tree that towered over a busy road. A former nun was upset about dirty bathrooms in Wild Duck Pond in Ridgewood. A Teaneck golfer was frustrated because he never could get the choice tee times on the county’s public courses. These weren’t issues that shook the foundations of Bergen County government. But the situations troubled some everyday citizens. And their complaints, they felt, had fallen through the cracks. There were scores of other people like them, folks who said government officials never returned their messages, or failed to keep their promises when they did call back. Some say their trail of complaints stretched back for years. So when they heard about Bergen County’s new constituent …

Drop In Overtime Costs At Jail Leads Countywide Decline

County on pace for 8 percent drop in overtime costs.

Employees at the Bergen County Jail racked up $1.72 million worth of overtime in 2010, more than twice as much as the majority of county departments. The four highest overtime recipients in the county were corrections officers, including two men who boosted their six-figure salaries by more than 60 percent by collecting a combined $129,516 in extra pay. In fact, jail workers dominated the rankings of county overtime earners in 2010, with five corrections officers in the top 10, and 10 in the top 20. “We came in with the intent to do something about that,’’ said Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino, who took office in January. The numbers indicate that Saudino has begun tackling overtime at the jail. County payroll records provided to …

It seems to me that these is some sort of thinking that if a particular department isn't paying the bill, that it can be padded. All gov't agencies eventually come to me (and you too) looking to get paid!! When do we get to stop the practice of patrol cars 'guarding' PSE&G and VERIZON when they are out working on the street? All that is is UNION Brothers making work for other UNION Brothers. The …   more ›
