Letter asks that Zoning Board not grant variances to developer to save the last building of historical significance to Fort Lee's place in the early film industry.
The Fort Lee Historic Site, Structure, Cultural & Landmark Committee, a committee within The Fort Lee Historical Society created by ordinance by the Mayor and Council of Fort Lee, submitted an advisory letter to the Zoning Board of Adjustment requesting that the board not grant the variances required by the developer to demolish 'Rambo's Saloon' located at 2423 First Street. According to the Historical Society executive board, that unamimously voted in support of this letter, the Historic Site committee is charged by the Mayor and Council with the responsibility to advise the Zoning Board of the historic significance of any property that is in jeopardy of being demolished. There is an application before the Zoning Board of Adjustment seeking height, side and rear-yard variances to demolish the structure known as 'Rambo's Saloon' in order to construct a new residential two-family dwelling.
The site plans for the property known as 'Rambo's Saloon,' located at 2423 First Street, are on the Fort Lee Zoning Board's agenda for Tuesday night. The applicant is seeking height, side and rear-yard variances to construct a new two-family residential dwelling on the property. At their meeting last week, The Fort Lee Historical Society discussed petitioning the Mayor and Council to save 'Rambo's Saloon,' a house dating back to the Civil War era, from being demolished. Rambo's is better known to locals as 'Gus Becker's Saloon.' Gus was the bartender at Rambo's before taking it over in the 1920's. He ran it as a saloon until 1977. The Planning Board will be meeting Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers of Borough Hall. The Zoning Board of Adjustment will meeting Tuesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers of Borough Hall. The meeting is scheduled to include the introduction of the plans seeking variances for the demolition of the house known as "Rambo's Hotel" on First Street. Since the filing of those plans, The Fort Lee Historical Society is petitioning to save the house based on its historic role in the early film industry in Fort Lee. The developer is seeking variances needed to erect a two-family house on that property. See what's going on in town this week.
The Fort Lee Board of Education will be meeting Monday in the auditorium at Fort Lee High School on Lemoine Avenue. The public work session will be held from 6 pm to 7 pm. The Board will then meet in a closed session from 7 pm to 8 pm before beginning its regular public meeting at 8 pm. The Planning Board is also meeting Monday beginning at 7:30 pm in the Council Chambers of Borough Hall. Below is a quick look at five things you should know about and might not want to miss this week: Number one: The Fort Lee Zoning Board meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Borough Hall’s Council Chambers. Click here to download the agenda. Number two: The Fort Lee Mayor and Council meet Thursday for an executive session in Borough Hall’s executive conference room 201. Although the borough issued a notice on its website that the meeting will begin at 6 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m., an immediate motion for closed session is expected, and the meeting won’t reopen to the public until at least the usual 8 p.m. The meeting agenda will be available for download on the borough’s website later in the week and in hard copy at Borough Hall by 2 p.m. …

Tommy, I will be there in spirit. I believe there is a lot of pressure on the borough to buy this property, and I hope they do. Fort Lee is facing its second lawsuit over the van fiasco, and we haven't heard from three of the families yet. the borough needs some positive news to offset these lawsuits so, maybe the will buy the property to silence some of their critics.
