The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen volleyball team held its first home state playoff match since 1996 Thursday, beating Lakeland, 2-1, even after dropping the first game. But the event was more than just a volleyball match; it doubled as a disaster relief drive in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Originally organized by Fort Lee freshman volleyball coach James Puliatte, who urged people to bring relief items for storm victims to the pre-match rally, the donation drive grew to include all of Fort Lee’s schools, and the result was two full vans of goods and supplies that were sent to Jersey City. “I was truly proud to see how our students stepped up [Thursday] and all the administration that was at the game supporting them,” Puliatte said in an …

Fort Lee freshman volleyball coach James Puliatte said Wednesday that because Lakeland is currently getting snow, the volleyball game and relief efforts planned for Wednesday have been pushed back a day. How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen.
Football: Fort Lee fell to 2-6 on the season Friday night when they lost 28-7 at Dumont High School. Frankie Goris scored the only touchdown for the Bridgemen on a short run. “We made too many mistakes early,” said head coach Bill Straub. The team will take the field again on Friday, Nov. 4, when they visit Mahwah High School for a 6 p.m. start. Boys Soccer: The Bridgemen lost a close one on Tuesday, when they visited Cliffside Park and fell 2-1. Fort Lee’s record dropped to 9-4-1 on the season. How was your week? This is how the week went for the Fort Lee Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen high school sports teams.
Football The Bridgemen improved to 2-5 on the season Friday night, when they defeated Englewood during their last home game of the season. Fort Lee picked up the 19-0 win during the seniors’ last game at home. Frankie Goris had 12 carries and two touchdowns for the Bridgemen. Quarterback Mario Jacovino scored an 8-yard touchdown, Tyler Sanders had 13 tackles and Justin Parra chipped in with 6 tackles and 3 sacks. Head coach Bill Straub was very happy for his seniors on such a special night. “It was a great team win, and I am so happy for the seniors to get the win they deserve on senior night,” Straube said. Football: The Bridgemen fell to 1-5 on Friday when they lost at Ramsey High School by a score of 35-0. Ramsey improved to 5-1 with the win. Fort Lee head coach Bill Straub hopes the team can learn from games like this. “We hope to use some of these tough losses to get better for the rest of the season,” he said. Football Fort Lee fell to 1-4 on Thursday night when they hosted Bergen County powerhouse River Dell High School. The Bridgemen lost 59-21. Mario Jacovino threw three touchdown passes--Tyler Sanders was the recipient of two of those passes--along with a catch by Masaru Yamaguchi. Head coach Bill Straub took his hat off to River Dell. “We got beat by one of the best programs in the whole state,” said Straub. Football Fort Lee fell to 1-3 on the season losing at Westwood 48-20 on Saturday night. The Bridgemen were as close as 28-20 in the third quarter, but the Cardinals wore them down. Fort Lee’s Josh Ford returned a kick for a touchdown. Senior Frankie Goris had two touchdown runs for Fort Lee and senior Tyler Sanders had eight catches for the Bridgemen. Football The Bridgemen had a big afternoon Saturday, when they defeated rival Cliffside Park 39-35 in a nail-biter on the road. With 2:06 left in the game, Cliffside Park scored a touchdown to take the lead 35-32. Fort Lee senior Frankie Goris responded with a 55-yard touchdown run on the Bridgemen’s first possession to give Fort Lee the lead for good. Goris recorded 227 rushing yards and 71 receiving yards on the afternoon, along with five tackles and an interception. Season preview: an experienced Fort Lee girls volleyball team wants to get out of the gates quickly this season, unlike last year, when they had to dig themselves out of an early-season hole.
The Lady Bridgemen are anxious to get the season underway, and they will not have to wait long. On Sept. 9, the Fort Lee volleyball team will open their 2011 season at Bergenfield High School, whom they lost to in a close match last season. Leadership will be they key in games like this, and throughout the entire season, and due to the team’s good mix of juniors and seniors, leadership should not be a problem.
