About 65 percent of those polled said they remained without power for at least five days. "Two-thirds of New Jersey residents were affected when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the Garden State three weeks ago," a press release about the poll said. Approximately one in five residents said they were forced out of their homes by the storm, with about 6 percent of residents telling pollsters they were still not able to permanently return. Politicians said this election season was 'very difficult' because of storm.
After millions of New Jersey residents spent most of last week without power, gas, and even lost their homes, Tuesday’s general election was likely the farthest from their minds. But for politicians who have continued to campaign through the storm, the election has remained a focus. “It’s been a very, very difficult procedure because of the storm,” Essex County Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold said. Sebold is the Democratic chairwoman in Livingston and has helped local candidates with their own races. She said her candidates have struggled to reach voters as power outages have stopped their printer, in Irvington, from producing mailers. “I’ve never experienced anything like this ever, in all my years of being involved in politics…

Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia
The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. Instead, transit crews had begun an extensive damage review. “With the break of daylight, NJ TRANSIT began to inspect and assess the full extent of the damage," …

Fire Chief Keith Sabatino cautions residents to stay inside, "Downed wires and fallen trees make for extremely dangerous conditions."
Borough officials report that most residents north of the George Washington Bridge are without power. So are residents in the south side of town along Abbott Boulevard. The Hampshire House Apartments and parts of the Horizon House are also currently powerless. As of midnight, PSE&G is reporting between 5,001 and 10,000 customers without power in Fort Lee according to its power outage map. It is uncertain at this time when power will be restored. PSE&G had to cease any overnight repairs as wind gusts reached over 45mph. Crews will begin repair work around 8am Tuesday morning. Officials are reporting that many trees and wires have fallen around town making borough roads impassable. The police and fire department responded to a call of a …
Christie questions Langford's decision to tell residents to stay in direct conflict with Christie's orders.
Gov. Christie hammered Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford's advice that Atlantic City residents to stay where they were even after Christie emphasized the need to evacuate the city. "Mayor Langford told them to stay at shelters in the city and now they're stuck," Christie said during the a Monday night conference. "Despite my admonition, he gave them comfort to stay." Atlantic City residents who stayed behind were stuck in a shelter as Hurricane Sandy was making landfall Monday night. Earlier in the day, Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management officials called all first responders off the street for safety concerns. He went on to say there were some residents who were angry they were told to evacuate during Hurricane Irene, but …
Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said that borough officials are “as ready as we can possibly be,” but that damage, possible blackouts and dangerous conditions are inevitable.
The Mayor of Fort Lee says borough officials are about as prepared as they can be for the arrival and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, having begun planning about five days ago when it became apparent that the storm was likely to significantly impact the area. But he also warned residents to take the storm very seriously and stay inside. Sokolich said Fort Lee officials and crews have cleaned sewers, trimmed trees and removed as many leaves as possible over the last several days. The borough has also invested in additional generators and equipment to pump residents out should that become necessary. Sokolich said all of the borough’s emergency service agencies have extra staffing working, and that an emergency command center, which brings them…
Fort Lee public schools will be closed Tuesday, Oct. 30 because of the storm, as state Education Commissioner issues statement urging schools to close statewide.
Fort Lee students, like many across the state, will have another day off from school Tuesday, school officials announced. “Due to the severe weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy all Fort Lee district schools and offices will be closed Tuesday,” Superintendent of Schools Steven Engravalle announced on the school district’s website. In addition, all sports, clubs, after-school activities and the latch-key aftercare program are also cancelled for Tuesday, according to Engravalle. The approaching storm had already forced Fort Lee school officials to close school Monday, as well as to cancel the Fort Lee Board of Education meeting scheduled for Monday night.
