Fort Lee BOE Approves Contracts of Superintendent, Assistant

Steven Engravalle was officially approved as Superintendent through 2015, and Sharon Amato was approved through June 2013, with the issue of merit pay yet to be determined.

The Fort Lee Board of Education approved Steven Engravalle’s contract as Superintendent of Schools and Sharon Amato’s contract as Assistant Superintendent at its regular business meeting Monday. Executive County Superintendent of Schools Robert M. Gilmartin reviewed and approved both contracts, according to school officials. Engravalle’s contract, which calls for an annual salary of $167,500, runs through June 2015 and is retroactive to July 1. Amato, whose contract runs through the end June 2013, will earn an annual salary of $141,462. The school board voted 5 to 2 in late June to appoint Engravalle to the post for the next three years, pending county approval of the contract. At the same meeting, the board also appointed Amato Assistant …

Why was more than $100,000 cut for special needs services in the schools? It is bad enough that our kids with Autism are "stuck in a library". It isn't fair that they don't have a classroom to call their own. Its not fair for the teachers either. They can't even set up a area for themselves to teach effectively. No one tells the parents what the heck is going on. Believe me I will be attending …   more ›

School Board Could Appoint Engravalle Superintendent Tuesday

Appointment of Steven Engravalle as Superintendent and Sharon Amato as Assistant Superintendent are on the BOE’s agenda for Tuesday’s special meeting, which starts at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Fort Lee public school students, their parents and community members could learn Tuesday who will occupy the top two posts in the district when school re-opens in the fall. Appointment of Steven Engravalle as Superintendent of Schools at a salary of $167,500 and Sharon Amato as Assistant Superintendent of Schools at a salary of $141,462 are on the agenda for the Fort Lee Board of Education’s special public business meeting, potentially ending months of speculation dating back to last September as to who would be at the helm once Interim Superintendent Steven Engravalle’s interim status expires at the end of June. Earlier this month, the board announced that the search for a permanent superintendent was down to two finalists. If the board …

Question of the Week

Poll Question: What is The Biggest Challenge Facing School District?

Our Question of the Week: Referendum, appointing superintendent or both?

Last week, the Fort Lee Board of Education introduced an approximately $30 million school bond referendum that if passed would upgrade aging school facilities, add some classrooms at the middle school and address some longstanding infrastructure concerns. However, in the opinion of many Fort Lee Patch readers, it wouldn’t go very far in addressing overcrowding in Fort Lee Schools—something many see as the bigger problem. During the same meeting last Monday, the board also tabled a decision on replacing outgoing Superintendent of Schools Raymond Bandlow, who’s set to leave the school district on Oct. 31, with Assistant Superintendent Steven Engravalle as “Acting” Superintendent. As always, we want to know what you think. Which of these do …

BOE Officials: Don't Expect ‘Major Paradigm Changes’ In Superintendent Replacement

BOE president and vice president reiterate their commitment to finding the “best-qualified and most capable” Superintendent in letter to parents

Fort Lee Board of Education officials Tuesday issued a letter to parents of children in the school district assuring them that the BOE is “committed to actively seeking the best-qualified and most capable candidate for the position of Superintendent” in the wake of current Superintendent Raymond Bandlow’s recent resignation. Bandlow will leave the Fort Lee School District on Oct. 31 to assume the duties of Superintendent in Beacon, N.Y. “Please be assured that as a Board, we take this responsibility with utmost seriousness,” the letter, which is signed by board president Arthur Levine and vice president Linda McCue, states. “We are all aware of the challenges our district faces, as well as the opportunities we could be maximizing. We will …

YES!!! @ Paul and Billy! We want the BOE to represent the people of Fort Lee better, which I truly believe they hear us and are moving in a great direction! We need the people at the BOE meetings so they have a presence, and be part of their schools' decisions--- no blame game, be part of it! A better contract is necessary, we have a new way of 'doing business' and need to maintain it!   more ›
