Fort Lee Superintendent Returns, Says He Wants Police in Every School

Steven Engravalle said he would reach out to Fort Lee’s police chief to discuss plans for continued school security in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn., as parents expressed strong concerns Monday.

Fort Lee’s Superintendent of Schools, attending his first public school board meeting since finishing his two-month leave of absence, said Monday that school security should be a priority, especially in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. in December, and that if he had it his way, there would be a police officer in every public school building in the Fort Lee district. Superintendent Steven Engravalle also pledged to reach out to the Chief of the Fort Lee Police Department Tuesday. The issue of security was first raised at Monday’s special business meeting by new board member David Sarnoff, who noted that committee assignments were made earlier in the evening, and that he is now on the security committee, along with …

every school should have security guards in the parking lot as well. The high school has it and they look at id and write down your name and license plate numbers. It's not much but it is a first line of defense. Schools now have teachers doing hall duty and it isn't right to have them in harms way.   more ›

BOE to Discuss Superintendent in Private, Award Vendor Contracts

The Fort Lee Board of Education’s special public meeting is Monday at 8 p.m. in the high school library. The BOE plans to discuss the Superintendent of Schools in private, with “personnel matters” also planned for public session.

The Fort Lee Board of Education will hold a special private and special public business meeting Monday, with the awarding of vendor contracts for 2013 and as yet undisclosed personnel matters on the table. Among the vendor contracts to be awarded is the selection of a board attorney. Board president Yusang Park said last week that BOE members were in the process of reviewing requests for proposals (RFPs) for all of its professional services and expected to vote on them at Monday’s special meeting. As of Sunday night, the school district had yet to post a meeting agenda on its website, but according to a notice issued late last week, the board will discuss personnel matters, “including the Superintendent of Schools,” in its private session…

Mayor, Council to Hold Special Meeting on Amending Redevelopment 5 Plan

The meeting on Dec. 22 at 8 p.m. is to discuss an ordinance the council introduced Thursday that would add five parcels to the existing redevelopment area

The Fort Lee Borough Council passed a resolution Thursday and introduced an accompanying ordinance that would expand Redevelopment Area 5 by about two-thirds of an acre by integrating five parcels of land adjacent to the roughly 16-acre area. The Mayor and Council also scheduled a special meeting and public hearing on the ordinance (Ord. 2011—25) for Dec. 22. The resolution passed Thursday determined that the five parcels taken together qualify as an “Area in Need of Redevelopment” in accordance with the Local Redevelopment and Housing Law after the Fort Lee Planning Board held a special public meeting Nov. 30 on the matter and made the recommendation. The properties are identified on the Tax Map of the Borough of Fort Lee as Block 4851, …

Planning Board Holds Public Hearing on Proposed Expansion of Redevelopment 5

Public hearing was Wednesday; the plan would add about two-thirds of an acre to Redevelopment Area 5

The Fort Lee Planning Board held a special meeting and public hearing Wednesday on a preliminary investigation to determine whether five parcels of land qualify as an “Area in Need of Improvement” in accordance with the Local Redevelopment and Housing Law, thereby expanding Redevelopment Area 5. The properties in question—identified on the Tax Map of the Borough of Fort Lee as Block 4851, Lots 2, 3, and 4; a portion of Block 4855, Lot 2 and lands within the street right-of-way that were vacated by the realignment of Central Road with Federspiel Street as part of the Main Street widening project—would represent an expansion of the existing, roughly 16-acre Redevelopment Area 5 by about two-thirds of an acre. The Planning Board invited …
