State Implements Educational Learning Standards through Common Core

State Chief Academic Officer talks to teachers and administrators about transitioning to the new Common Core State Standards.

If you have school-aged children, then you have heard the words 'common core standard' being the new educational guideline for schools, but what does that really mean and how will it affect your child's education? The Common Core is a New Jersey Department of Education initiative designed to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards are designed to be relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that students need "for success in college and careers." Central to this model is the fusion of the ways in which the information is presented in class, how teachers can evaluate whether or not a child is learning the material and the process by which administrators can then …

I haven't seen in the Constitution where it says that you can own high-capacity ammo clips and assault rifles, but yet we have little kids getting shot down by lunatics using them, but you Republicans have no problem with allowing those kinds of weapons.   more ›

Amato Addresses School Security, Coping With Tragedy In Holiday Message

Fort Lee’s Interim Superintendent of Schools released a holiday message on the school district’s website, also mentioning her time in the role and calling it “the most rewarding experience” of her career.

Fort Lee’s interim superintendent of schools says students in the school district have been coping with the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. in the days since the deadly shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in part by paying tribute to the victims. In a holiday message to members of the Fort Lee school community posted on the Fort Lee Public School District’s website, Interim Superintendent of Schools Sharon Amato said she has also heard “many excellent suggestions” on how school officials can improve security. She said she would take those suggestions into consideration moving forward. “The tragedy in [Newtown] has shaken us to the core; but it has also helped us come together as a …

Fort Lee to Seek Permanent Middle School Principal, Will Consider Interim

Fort Lee’s new interim superintendent says an advertisement is set to go out this weekend for a middle school principal, but that if officials can’t find the right person right away, they may hire an interim until they do.

As Fort Lee students and teachers rapidly approach the halfway point of the school year, Lewis F. Cole Middle School is still without a permanent leader. But school officials say that while an advertisement is going out this weekend for a principal, they will consider an interim principal until they find the right person for the job. The issue came up at the Fort Lee Board of Education’s regular business meeting Monday, with several concerned parents pushing for answers. Officials said at the time that they had posted for an “interim principal,” a designation that only raised more questions, and that they had conducted interviews earlier in the year but didn’t approve anybody to take on the role permanently. Later in the meeting, the board…

Fort Lee Superintendent to Take Leave of Absence Until January

With Steven Engravalle out for the next two months on medical leave, Sharon Amato will run the day-to-day operations of the Fort Lee Public School District, serving as Interim Superintendent after board approval Monday.

The Fort Lee Board of Education Monday approved a nearly two-month leave of absence for Superintendent Steven Engravalle for medical reasons and appointed Sharon Amato Interim Superintendent of Schools during his absence. Engravalle’s leave of absence is effective Nov. 7 and continues until Jan. 2, 2013, according to the walk-in resolution the school board approved 5-0 with one abstention. Amato, whose status as interim superintendent is effective for the same period and was approved unanimously by the board, called the appointment “truly an honor and a privilege.” “I have spent more time in my life working in the Fort Lee schools than I’ve done anything else so you certainly have my commitment to the students and the members of the …

"The School Board had made some poor decisions in selecting Superintendents." --Thomas A Bennett That gets my nomination for understatement of the century! It's obviously the school board that's the underlying problem, by hiring a long parade of losers. They bear full responsibility for the Engravallle debacle, the Bandlow debacle, the Collabro debacle, and for the fact that, given their record …   more ›

Fort Lee BOE Approves Contracts of Superintendent, Assistant

Steven Engravalle was officially approved as Superintendent through 2015, and Sharon Amato was approved through June 2013, with the issue of merit pay yet to be determined.

The Fort Lee Board of Education approved Steven Engravalle’s contract as Superintendent of Schools and Sharon Amato’s contract as Assistant Superintendent at its regular business meeting Monday. Executive County Superintendent of Schools Robert M. Gilmartin reviewed and approved both contracts, according to school officials. Engravalle’s contract, which calls for an annual salary of $167,500, runs through June 2015 and is retroactive to July 1. Amato, whose contract runs through the end June 2013, will earn an annual salary of $141,462. The school board voted 5 to 2 in late June to appoint Engravalle to the post for the next three years, pending county approval of the contract. At the same meeting, the board also appointed Amato Assistant …

Why was more than $100,000 cut for special needs services in the schools? It is bad enough that our kids with Autism are "stuck in a library". It isn't fair that they don't have a classroom to call their own. Its not fair for the teachers either. They can't even set up a area for themselves to teach effectively. No one tells the parents what the heck is going on. Believe me I will be attending …   more ›

Engravalle Appointed Superintendent For Next Three Years

The appointment, which was not a unanimous decision on the part of the school board, is pending county approval; the Fort Lee BOE also voted Tuesday to appoint Dr. Sharon Amato Assistant Superintendent of Schools through June 2013.

Fort Lee’s Interim Superintendent of Schools Steven Engravalle will not be serving in an “interim” capacity for much longer, after the Fort Lee Board of Education voted 5 to 2 Tuesday to appoint him to the post of Superintendent of Fort Lee Schools for the next three years, pending approval of his contract by the Executive County Superintendent of Schools. The school board also appointed Dr. Sharon Amato Assistant Superintendent of Schools through the end of the upcoming school year. Board members Charlie Luppino, Angela Napolitano, Peter Suh, board president Arthur Levine and board vice president Linda McCue voted in favor of Engravalle’s appointment, while board members Yusang Park and Helen Yoon, who said "absolutely no" to the …

School Board Could Appoint Engravalle Superintendent Tuesday

Appointment of Steven Engravalle as Superintendent and Sharon Amato as Assistant Superintendent are on the BOE’s agenda for Tuesday’s special meeting, which starts at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Fort Lee public school students, their parents and community members could learn Tuesday who will occupy the top two posts in the district when school re-opens in the fall. Appointment of Steven Engravalle as Superintendent of Schools at a salary of $167,500 and Sharon Amato as Assistant Superintendent of Schools at a salary of $141,462 are on the agenda for the Fort Lee Board of Education’s special public business meeting, potentially ending months of speculation dating back to last September as to who would be at the helm once Interim Superintendent Steven Engravalle’s interim status expires at the end of June. Earlier this month, the board announced that the search for a permanent superintendent was down to two finalists. If the board …
