Water Main Break, Pedestrian Fatalities, Much More in Week's Local Headlines

The Week in Review: a roundup of local news stories on Fort Lee Patch.

What was described by borough officials as a “large water main break” at Palisade Avenue and Bluff Road Wednesday evening forced closure of a portion of roadway and left an unknown number of Fort Lee residents with little or no water pressure. Police closed the portion of Palisade Avenue from Columbia Avenue to Central Boulevard and said they received calls from as far away from where the water main break occurred as the north end of Fort Lee, and even Palisades Park and Englewood Cliffs. Service was restored to most of the borough within hours, but those in the immediate vicinity remained without service or at least had very low pressure for much longer. Some people very close to the break sustained severe damage to their property as well…

Fort Lee Bowling Teams Earn High Honors

Members of the boys and girls bowling teams had a great season, while the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen basketball teams turn their attention to the state tournament, which starts Tuesday.

The Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen bowling teams each had impressive seasons, with members of both teams being recognized by the league. Head coach Dennis Sayer had a lot to be proud of as both teams finished in fourth place and had hard-working student-athletes show up every practice and every match to represent Fort Lee. For the Lady Bridgemen, seniors Justine Valdez and Healin Park earned second team all-league honors, and senior Alexa Sudol made honorable mention for the team as well. The Bridgemen had success of their own, with senior Kei Kase and sophomores James Han and Ammad Quraishi making second team all-league and freshman Philip Plucinski earning honorable mention in what was a superb first year. “It was a great season and the …

Roundup: The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Fort Lee Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen high school sports teams.

Football The Bridgemen improved to 2-5 on the season Friday night, when they defeated Englewood during their last home game of the season. Fort Lee picked up the 19-0 win during the seniors’ last game at home. Frankie Goris had 12 carries and two touchdowns for the Bridgemen. Quarterback Mario Jacovino scored an 8-yard touchdown, Tyler Sanders had 13 tackles and Justin Parra chipped in with 6 tackles and 3 sacks. Head coach Bill Straub was very happy for his seniors on such a special night. “It was a great team win, and I am so happy for the seniors to get the win they deserve on senior night,” Straube said. The Fort Lee Board of Education took public comment for about 45 minutes Tuesday on the role of “Acting” or “Interim” Superintendent at a special meeting at Fort Lee School No. 1. The meeting was called after the board tabled a resolution that would have appointed Assistant Superintendent Steven Engravalle “Acting” Superintendent when Raymond Bandlow leaves the post on Oct. 31 at its last regular business meeting on Sept. 26 because of public outcry questioning Engravalle’s suitability for the role. “I know there were a lot of concerns that the board was making decisions without listening to the community, and it is for this reason that I asked the president to set up a meeting where we could be listening to the community,” said board …

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and the Lady Bridgemen; Athlete of the week: Nicolette Pappas of the girls volleyball team

Football Fort Lee fell to 1-4 on Thursday night when they hosted Bergen County powerhouse River Dell High School. The Bridgemen lost 59-21. Mario Jacovino threw three touchdown passes--Tyler Sanders was the recipient of two of those passes--along with a catch by Masaru Yamaguchi. Head coach Bill Straub took his hat off to River Dell. “We got beat by one of the best programs in the whole state,” said Straub. The Bridgemen will return to action on Friday, when they visit Ramsey for a 7 p.m. start. The game story for the River Dell game can be found here. How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen Sports Teams.

Football The Bridgemen had a big afternoon Saturday, when they defeated rival Cliffside Park 39-35 in a nail-biter on the road. With 2:06 left in the game, Cliffside Park scored a touchdown to take the lead 35-32. Fort Lee senior Frankie Goris responded with a 55-yard touchdown run on the Bridgemen’s first possession to give Fort Lee the lead for good. Goris recorded 227 rushing yards and 71 receiving yards on the afternoon, along with five tackles and an interception. The Bridgemen take the field again on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they visit the Westwood Cardinals at 7pm. How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen sports teams.

Football The Bridgemen fell to 0-2 after a 25-12 home loss to Ridgefield Park on Friday night. The Bridgemen looked good, but the Scarlets' offensive power took over in the second half. Fort Lee head coach Billy Straub is excited for their next challenge on Saturday at Cliffside Park at 1 p.m. Boy’s Soccer On Monday, the Bridgemen hosted Cliffside Park High School in a close matchup. The game ended in a 3-3 tie after the Bridgemen gave away a 3-0 lead. Fort Lee bounced back on Wednesday afternoon when they defeated a talented Ridgefield Park team after falling behind 1-0 at halftime.
