Drunk Driver Crashes Into Pole, Forcing Road Closure, Police Say

Police charged a 52-year-old man with DWI, after he allegedly crashed into a telephone pole on Lemoine Avenue late Tuesday night. Lemoine was closed between Main and Whiteman Streets until about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

An Englewood Cliffs man was charged with drunk driving after allegedly crashing into a telephone pole late Tuesday night and bringing down live wires across Lemoine Avenue at Hoym Street in Fort Lee, police said. Lemoine remained closed between Main Street and Whiteman Street Wednesday morning, snarling rush hour traffic in the borough, and police said the section of road wasn’t expected to reopen until late afternoon or early evening. Fort Lee police were detouring traffic at intersections leading to the scene Wednesday morning, and PSE&G crews were working at the scene near Whiteman Plaza, where wires remained on the ground across the entire roadway. Palisades Avenue was open leading to the George Washington Bridge, but traffic was …

On one hand, it would be embarrassing to the employee, but I think that people have the right to know if they were at risk of being infected if they were around this person before.   more ›

Water Main Break Leaves Residents with 'Little or No' Water Pressure

Update: United Water says repair work continues and could last until early Thursday afternoon.

What is being described by borough officials as a “large water main break” at Palisade Avenue and Bluff Road Wednesday evening forced closure of a portion of roadway and left an unknown number of Fort Lee residents with little or no water pressure. Fort Lee police said United Water was notified and were “responding to fix the main,” but that the company provided no estimate on how long it would take to fix the break or restore full service. Police closed the portion of Palisade Avenue from Columbia Avenue to Central Boulevard and were diverting traffic at the scene. Police said they received calls from as far away from where the water main break occurred as the north end of Fort Lee, and even Palisades Park and Englewood Cliffs. Fort Lee …

It's been my unfortunate experience that unless you can show that the damage was due to the negligence of the owner of water pipes, it's a tough battle, one I hope they win. Unless they have flood insurance it's a battle they may have to fight. Pipes break.   more ›

Route 5 Rock Stabilization Project ‘On Schedule,’ Road To Reopen in 2 Weeks

The short, winding highway connecting Fort Lee and Edgewater has been closed since early August

A spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) said Tuesday that the $3.8 million project to remove and stabilize loose rock along a three-tenths of a mile stretch of highway between Fort Lee and Edgewater is running on schedule, with Route 5, which has been closed in both directions since early August, expected to reopen in about two weeks. After about a month of partial closures and detours on Route 5 between the Fort Lee Pump Station and Undercliff Ave., the road closed completely on Aug. 8, as rock-scaling operations began along the western edge of the road bordered by a steep rock cliff. “Recent rock fall incidents have occurred along the cliff resulting in complete closures of the roadway,” NJDOT officials said …

State DOT To Close Route 5 Between Fort Lee, Edgewater For Month

Beginning Tuesday, drivers in both directions will be forced to take the long way around for the next month as NJDOT continues project to protect the road from falling rocks

After about a month of partial closures and detours on a three-tenths of a mile stretch of road between Fort Lee and neighboring Edgewater, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is planning to close the section of Route 5 completely in both directions starting Tuesday morning for about the next month, NJDOT officials announced Friday. The road closure and resulting detours are part of a $3.8 million project to “remove and stabilize” loose rock along the western edge of Route 5 between the Fort Lee Pump Station and Undercliff Ave., officials said.  “The closure is necessary for safety purposes during rock scaling operations,” officials said in a statement. “Closing the road to traffic will also allow the work to be …

State DOT Closes Portions of Route 5 to Protect Road From Falling Rocks

The road closures affect westbound traffic only in the early stages, but NJDOT also has a 28-day “complete closure” planned.

On Monday, drivers who use Route 5 to get from Edgewater to Fort Lee during peak, weekday hours were forced to start taking the long way around, as the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) began work on a $3.8 million project to remove and stabilize loose rock along the three-tenths of a mile stretch of road. NJDOT announced Friday it would start detouring all truck traffic on Route 5 westbound the next day as construction got underway between the Fort Lee Pump Station and Undercliff Avenue, and that the westbound lanes—or those heading from Edgewater to Fort Lee—would be closed and detoured to all traffic weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Monday. “The existing roadside rock outcrops consist of loose rock that has the …
