Cole Middle School Gym with a slate of games scheduled in the end-of-season tournament. The annual tournament begins with the seventh and eigth grade quarterfinals with all eight teams playing in four games on Saturday. “It’s my favorite time of the year," admits League President Mike Klein. "The middle school gym turns into our own little Madison Square Garden with a packed house and spirited, intense fans cheering on the teams.” This year the seventh and eighth grade division is packed with potential high school varsity players, which Klein says will make for extra exciting games with a high level of play. …

Game of the Week: Fort Lee Girls Basketball League Championship Game

Luppino Homes rallies to defeat Sokolich & Macri 17-15 for the 8th grade division title.

In what League President Mike Klein called one of the biggest comebacks in league history, Luppino Homes overcame a nine point deficit to beat Sokolich & Macri 17-15 in the Fort Lee Girls Basketball League’s championship game on Friday night. In front of a packed gym with dignitaries such as Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich in attendance, the night began with the consolation game between Step Mar Construction and Starr, Darcy & Starr. Whiz Kid: Eighth Grade Sensation Bernadette Darcy

Four honor roll classes, three sports, two loving parents and one ambition to do the best she can, Darcy fits the mold.

Last week, student athlete Shaina Rosa was introduced as the Whiz Kid of the Week with her never-miss-school approach while also excelling in two sports. This week, Patch is proud to present another young Fort Lee member of the community who also challenges herself with multiple sports and a tireless approach to success in the classroom. Bernadette Darcy is an eighth grader at Lewis F. Cole Middle School. She plays three sports, one for every season of the school year, and also takes all four high honor roll classes that are offered to her. “It’s a lot of work,” Bernadette said. “It’s good because you [can] have a work ethic and it prepares me for high school.” So with classes that include honors civics, algebra, science and language arts…

Fort Lee’s March Madness Starts Today Too

“It’s got more energy sometimes than Madison Square Garden,” said league President Mike Klein.

As college basketball players take to the floor for the beginning of the NCAA Tournament, Fort Lee’s own version of March Madness tips off tonight as well. With a “Madison Square Garden” level of energy alongside a “lose and go home” mentality, the Fort Lee Girl’s Basketball League starts the process of postseason play this evening with a tournament that league President Mike Klein compares to the ever-popular NCAAs. “It’s just as exciting at a different level,” he said. Where the college game features athletes typically between the ages of 18-24, these student athletes are only eight to 14 years old are playing in similar atmospheres. “You’ll see a very exciting game and a lot of energy in the building,” Klein said when describing what to…

Whiz Kid: Eighth Grade Student Athlete Shaina Rosa

Basketball, softball and school are just a few things that make Shaina special.

For the past few months, Patch has been highlighting some of the brightest minds, and most talented athletes that Fort Lee has to offer. And transitioning from winter to spring, Shaina Rosa has put herself into the same class of Whiz Kids. As a basketball playing, softball smacking, honor roll student, this eighth grader is something to see. Shaina plays in the Fort Lee Girls Basketball League and is the leading scorer of her traveling team, averaging 11 points per game. She is also on the town’s traveling softball team, having been named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Series last year. And if that wasn’t enough, Shaina has never missed a day of middle school and has been on the honor roll each of the past six semesters. “[…
