Olympic Judo Medalists, MMA Fighters to Visit New Martial Arts Center

Fort Lee’s Renzo Gracie Martial Arts Training Center will celebrate its grand opening Saturday with some special guests.

The first-ever U.S. gold medalist in Judo and a bronze medalist from the 2012 U.S. team will join other athletes in Fort Lee Saturday at the grand opening of a new martial arts training center on Lemoine Avenue. Kayla Harrison (78 kg) won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, and Marti Malloy (57 kg) brought home a bronze. Both will be at Renzo Gracie Martial Arts Training Center on Saturday afternoon, along with two-time Olympian Travis Stevens (81 kg), who placed fifth in Judo at the London Games. Team USA TKD Students Continue Their Success

Merissa Pico and Marc-Dimitry Akda return from Jamaica on high note.

Master Alvin Bernard is very proud of all of his students, and Merissa Pico and Marc-Dimitry Akda just added to that pride. Both are students at Team USA on Lemoine Avenue in Fort Lee and have accomplished so much already. After returning from Ochos Rios, Jamaica, the duo added more gold medals to their already impressive resumes. Merissa Pico won the gold in the Caribbean Open for sparring and for patterns. Marc-Dimitry Akda did the same in his division. Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Puerto Rico were just some of the countries that participated at this event. Local Taekwondo Instructor Has Martial Arts in His Blood

Master Alvin Bernard Has Been Teaching Taekwondo in Fort Lee Since 1989.

For the past 15 years, Master Alvin Bernard has taught many people at Team USA Taekwon-Do Fitness Center on Lemoine Avenue in Fort Lee. Bernard is a Master in WTF, which is Olympic-type sparring and is also a sixth degree black belt who trains in kickboxing, MMA and Taekwondo and has accomplished a lot over the years. In 2003, Bernard’s first big accomplishment was representing the U.S. in the International Championships in Australia and winning three gold medals. In 2005, Bernard became the coach of the U.S. National Team for a few years and was also appointed coach of the U.S. National Team in 2010. Fort Lee Taekwondo Star Qualifies For USA Junior National Team

Merissa Pico accomplished the feat for a third consecutive year.

Fort Lee resident Merissa Pico continues to accomplish great things in the sport of Taekwondo, recently making the USA Junior National Team for the third year in a row. Pico, who is originally from China, trains at Team USA Taekwon-Do Fitness Center on Lemoine Avenue, as reported by Patch in May, under the tutelage of Master Alvin Bernard. Pico is happy with the results and her well-deserved success after such a tough road. "It was great just to reclaim my spot," Pico said. "And because I trained really hard, it was just gratifying that the hard work paid off." Beyond Hollywood: Fort Lee's Tiger Twins

Once martial artists in Hollywood movies, James and Simon Kim have made a commitment to teaching Tae Kwon Do in Fort Lee.

After playing roles as thugs in Hollywood martial arts movies like Exit Wounds (2001) with Steven Seagal and The Tuxedo (2002) with Jackie Chan, the Tiger Twins decided to return to their root values: Tae Kwon Do and community.  Now instructors, James and Simon Kim of Tiger Twins Tae Kwon Do Academy in Fort Lee describe fondly their decades-long successes and relationships with stars like Chuck Norris and Seagal, but say it was finally time to leave L.A. “The unique thing about us was that we met one of the biggest Hollywood stars like Chuck Norris, Jet Li, and we fought with those guys on sets,” James Kim said. “But we felt for us that L.A. was more about meeting actors and stars rather than engaging in martial arts, so we decided to …
