Letter to the Editor: No Suffiicient Warning Cars Would Be Towed

Center Avenue resident writes there was little warning that cars would be towed during snow storm, resulting in financial hardship for many.

Editor's note: This letter, sent to Mayor Mark Sokolich, was submitted to Patch as a Letter to the Editor.   I am writing about the recent storm that occurred this last weekend from February 9 through February 10, 2013. We received a little more than a foot of snow, and the town did a very good job keeping the roads clean. Unfortunately, they did not do a good job informing residents about their plans, resulting in broken hearts and financial hardship for a number of people. For many residents, instead of digging out our cars, or taking them out of clean, dry garages, they were collecting them on long lines and paying hundreds of dollars in fines. In Englewood, NJ, the Mayor there ordered that all residents be called two times, and emailed…

It seems as though this article should be closed for further comments. Suffice to say the street had plenty of signs to explain to residents the rules and regulations of parking. Case closed.   more ›

Op-Ed: ‘Serious Questions’ Raised by Non-Renewal of Teacher, Says FLEA Treasurer

A statement from the treasurer of the Fort Lee Education Association, Howard Lipoff.

Editor’s Note: The following is the text of a statement made by Howard Lipoff, treasurer of the Fort Lee Education Association (FLEA), to the Fort Lee Board of Education Monday, May 7, at the BOE's regular business meeting. Lipoff provided the statement to Patch to publish as an letter to the editor: My name is Howard Lipoff and I am the treasurer of the Fort Lee Education Association. I addressed this board a year ago and expressed my concern when teachers at the high school were terminated abruptly after three years of excellent reviews. Now, a similar situation has occurred at the middle school. These decisions have caused great damage to the Fort Lee School District and I urge the board to take actions to rectify the situation tonight…

Op-Ed: Fort Lee Resident, Former Assembly Candidate Responds to Weinberg Editorial

By Keith Jensen.

Editor’s Note: Fort Lee resident and former Republican candidate for State Assembly in District 37 Keith Jensen submitted this letter in response to Sen. Loretta Weinberg’s (D-37) recent Op-Ed published on NorthJersey.com. Senator Weinberg, in response to your opinion most recently published in our local County newspaper and here on the Teaneck and Fort Lee PATCH, I find it unsettling that you did not bring these issues up about Port Authority salaries before. Much more unsettling is how you remain silent when towns in your District, like Teaneck and Fort Lee, are passing referendums and raising school and municipal budgets to cover the need for Millions of Dollars because our school systems do not have enough money to operate. We would …

Senator Weinberg, where are you? Our tolls are going up again this weekend. Mayor Sokolich and Council, why do you remain silent? Look into this; the toll hike is happening at exactly the same time Union City Mayor Brian Stack introduced a budget balanced by a one-time gift of $2.8 Million from THE PORT AUTHORITY! http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/…   more ›

Letter: Parent Expresses Reservations About Interim Superintendent

Fort Lee resident and parent Stefanie Stuart addressed these remarks to the Fort Lee Board of Education Monday, April 16, 2012. The complete text was subsequently submitted to Patch as a letter to the editor.

Editor’s Note: The Fort Lee Board of Education will have a special private work session and public meeting Monday, April 23. Click here for more details.  As any parent, I feel strongly vested in the outcome of the superintendent search. Initially I was supportive of Mr. Engravalle assuming the role, and he has done a great job to date. I have no doubt that he is good enough for the job, however I strongly believe our children deserve the best, and I have reservations that Mr. Engravalle is the best candidate for the position of Superintendent. In my opinion, there are two superior candidates, namely Robert Kravitz and Frank Romano. A superior candidate can lead by example. I don't believe Mr. Engravalle was setting a good example at a …

Op-Ed: FLEA President Chides BOE Leaders for ‘Partisan Political Posturing’

Gary Novosielski took issue Monday with a statement by BOE president Arthur Levine and vice president Linda McCue on a 28.3 percent increase in state aid to Fort Lee schools.

Editor’s Note: The following is the text of a statement made by Gary Novosielski, president of the Fort Lee Education Association (FLEA) to the Fort Lee Board of Education Monday, Feb. 27, at the BOE's regular business meeting. Novosielski provided the statement to Patch to publish as an Op-Ed piece/letter to the editor: It was shocking to me to read the quote in a recent Fort Lee Patch article attributed to board president Levine and vice president McCue, jointly stating that "As a result of [Governor Christie’s] initiatives upon taking office, [we’ll] become the beneficiary of additional funding for the Fort Lee School District." The fact is that even if the governor’s budget were to pass exactly as proposed, Fort Lee would still be …

Former Edgewater Councilwoman Calls on Gov to Veto Senate Bill, End ‘Crony Capitalism’

Letter to the editor from Maureen Holtje

To the Editor: New Jersey Bill #S-2072 is a perfect example of legislators talking out of both sides of their mouth. On one, side they claim to be against “Pay-to-Play,” No Bid Contracts - Crony Capitalism, and on the other side they support Bill #S-2072. #S-2072 is touted as a $70 million cost savings for government. It is not and will cost NJ taxpayers millions more and disenfranchise small vendors. This Bill is a back door effort to circumvent tighter “Pay-to-Play” laws and protect Crony Capitalism practices.   Bill #S-2072 defies the spirit of NJ Local Contracts Law (40A:11-13), which encourages free, open and competitive bidding. Moreover, section (40A:11-5 (3.A) and key to the misguided motivation of this bill,  requires entities  …

I'm a government contractor. I never look at the newspaper for bid notices. First of all they are too small to even read. Secondly, they never carry enough information. Thirdly, I would have to pick up the various newspapers each week. Fourthly, I can get the information on line easier with two or three searches. There is no reason to spend the extra money to put the information in print. It is …   more ›

OpEd: Attorney General Paula Dow on Bullying

The attorney general says changing attitudes through awareness and enforcement can help stop bullying.

Envision this scene: a student approaches his middle school principal and pours out a tale of being harassed verbally, as well as assaulted physically, by classmates who have been bullying him for months. The principal listens sympathetically, then offers a prospective solution: I would certainly understand, he tells the boy, if you retaliated against the bullies with physical force. If this advice sounds ridiculous to you – like something out of a Saturday Night Live skit or a comedy spoofing adolescent life – think again. It’s what allegedly happened to a student in New Jersey who was bullied for most of his middle school years and went to the school principal seeking help. That principal, now retired, may have been well-intentioned in …

Teen With Heart Condition Praises Fort Lee Mayor For Compassion, Friendship

Letter to the editor from 15-year-old John Santino Damato: "I want him and the people of Fort Lee to know how lucky we are to have him as our Mayor."

To the Editor: Re: Fort Lee Mayor a Man of the People I first met Mark Sokolich when I was in kindergarten. I went to school with his son Devin, and over the past ten years Devin has become my best friend. During this time, his dad, Mark Sokolich, has become a very important part of my life. When I first met Mark, I remember being afraid because he seemed to be so big and had a very loud voice. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the biggest part of Mark was his heart. From the moment I met Mark, he made me feel like I was part of his family. Mark has been a presence in Fort Lee sports and schools for as long as I can remember. Mark coached me in sports and taught me about leadership and kindness. His wife Denise was always there at…

Fort Lee Education Association Mourns Passing of Maria Pulice

Letter to the editor from FLEA president Gary Novosielski

To the Editor: The Fort Lee school community mourns the passing of Maria Pulice, who passed away Friday.  Maria was a teacher in the Fort Lee schools for nearly 40 years, where her dedication and love for her students was always evident, even on the toughest of days. I knew her best in her role as president of the Fort Lee Education Association, and I am honored to succeed her in that office.  She served proudly in union leadership for many years, the last seven years as president, until her retirement in 2010, and then for an additional year as immediate past president, where she continued to share her valuable knowledge and experience with those who carry on after her. Maria was always a fierce and fearless advocate for the rights of her…

School Board President Remembers Longtime Fort Lee Educator, Teachers Union Head

BOE president Arthur Levine submitted this letter to the editor on the passing of Maria Pulice

Maria Pulice, a longtime educator and former head of the teachers union, has passed away. Maria touched so many children's lives when she worked at School 1 for over 40 years. Beyond her teaching duties, Maria served as head of The Fort Lee Teachers Union (FLEA). Negotiating with Maria was a unique experience, fighting hard for her fellow teachers she could be at times described as cantankerous. It was never personal, as a day or so after our negotiation sessions, I would chat with her and gain some insight into someone who was a generous and caring human being. The thing about her was somehow despite trying she could not conceal the warmth and human kindness within her. Maria genuinely cared about people. One of the best programs we have …
