Fort Lee’s third annual Coaches vs. Cancer game is Thursday, Jan. 17, when the team takes on Dumont. Recreation league president hopes for a good showing from players in his league as well.
The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen basketball team hosts Dumont Thursday, but it won’t be any ordinary game. It’s the third annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” game to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In 2012, the Lady Bridgemen also played host to Dumont for the event. The girls decorated the Fort Lee High School gym to raise awareness of the various forms of cancer, and local businesses and families donated food, drinks and baked goods, with all proceeds from the sale of refreshments going to the organization that funds research and helps people fighting the disease. The 2012 event brought in more than $900 for the American Cancer Society, but head girls basketball coach Stacie Zafiris-Findanis said the team is hoping to be able to raise …

The annual Fort Lee High School Athletic Booster Club-sponsored “Senior Appreciation Night” for fall athletes took place Wednesday in the high school cafeteria.
Fort Lee High School sports coaches had the opportunity to pay special tribute to their senior athletes before their peers and parents Wednesday, when the FLHS Athletic Booster Club hosted a “Senior Appreciation Night” for fall athletes. The booster club sponsors the event at the end of every sports season, according to club president Sandi Klein. On Wednesday, the coaches took turns calling their senior players to the front of the high school cafeteria, where the event took place, and spoke a little about their teams and the seasons they had before mentioning a few words about each individual senior athlete. Head football coach Billy Straub called his seniors “a special group to me” in spite of a 2-8 season in which the Bridgemen lost …

The four Lady Bridgemen senior captains may be done with basketball, but their memories of playing together will last a lifetime, and there's always softball to look forward to.
The Lady Bridgemen basketball team worked hard and worked together all season long, and senior leadership was a key for the team. Ally Long made second team all-league as a junior and first team all-league as a senior. As for her teammates, Anthe Nikolaidis made honorable mention all-league in both her junior and senior years, Natalia Kim made second team all-league as a senior and Megan Gimson made honorable mention all-league as well. All four seniors were captains this season. The four players together have quite the resume, and their hard work has certainly paid off. The girls have made four holiday tournament championship appearances and have won three of them. They also strung together three consecutive state tournament appearances. …

The Fort Lee High School Athletic Booster Club hosted Senior Appreciation Night for winter sports Wednesday.
All of the head coaches of Fort Lee High School’s winter sports teams had the opportunity to honor their senior players Wednesday at the high school auditorium, where the FLHS Athletic Booster Club hosted a Senior Appreciation Night for winter student-athletes. Bowling coach Dennis Sayer, cheerleading coach Nina Anderson, wrestling coach Alex Almeyda, boys basketball coach John Ziemba, girls basketball coach Stacie Zafiris and indoor track coach Ed Garrison took turns not only talking about their respective teams and seasons, but also about each individual senior athlete who helped lead them, with some of the coaches choking back tears as they did so. Fort Lee Athletic Director Patrick Ambrosio, who served as master of ceremonies and …

The Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen both lost in the first round of the state tournament.
Last week, Feb. 28, marked the end of the basketball season for both Fort Lee High School basketball teams, but the two teams' respective seasons were not without highlights or excitement. The Bridgemen fell to Rutherford, 66-63, in spite of 27 points from Josh Ford. The team made some mental mistakes but played their hearts out in a valiant attempt to extend their season. Fort Lee finished 12-13 for the year and has a lot to look forward to next season. “The good news is we only lose one starter to graduation, and as much as I despise the term ‘next year,’ we do have a lot to look forward to,” said assistant coach James Puliatte. The season was filled with memories of big wins and also head coach John Ziemba’s historic 300th win. The Lady…

Members of the boys and girls bowling teams had a great season, while the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen basketball teams turn their attention to the state tournament, which starts Tuesday.
The Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen bowling teams each had impressive seasons, with members of both teams being recognized by the league. Head coach Dennis Sayer had a lot to be proud of as both teams finished in fourth place and had hard-working student-athletes show up every practice and every match to represent Fort Lee. For the Lady Bridgemen, seniors Justine Valdez and Healin Park earned second team all-league honors, and senior Alexa Sudol made honorable mention for the team as well. The Bridgemen had success of their own, with senior Kei Kase and sophomores James Han and Ammad Quraishi making second team all-league and freshman Philip Plucinski earning honorable mention in what was a superb first year. “It was a great season and the …

An already special night for the Bridgemen basketball team became even more special for Coach "Z."
On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Fort Lee Bridgemen basketball team was already anticipating a special night at Fort Lee High School. It was senior night and a big game against Tenafly, but a certain surprise for head coach John Ziemba added to the magic of the night. After the JV game, the team brought coach Ziemba into a classroom; he was told that he was going to be watching a video made for the seniors. Instead, it was a video honoring his own 300th win as a coach, which cam back in early January. “He just kept saying while we were watching, ‘Where did you get this stuff?’" said assistant coach James Puliatte. “The video included certificates from his freshmen year of high school basketball, clips of his college career, newspaper articles …
