Aakash Dalal, the former Lodi man allegedly behind the anti-semitic arsons earlier this year, has pleaded not guilty to additional charges that he plotted to murder the assistant prosecutor in the case.
The former Lodi man who allegedly played a guiding role in the firebombings of Jewish synagogues earlier this year has pleaded not guilty to new charges that he conspired to kill the assistant prosecutor handling his case, authorities said Thursday. Aakash Dalal, 20, who had been attending Rutgers University and has a New Brunswick address, plotted to obtain a gun and murder Assistant Prosecutor Martin Delaney after he made bail, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. Dalal, who was scheduled to be released from jail this week after arranging to post $1 million bail, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to possess a weapon for unlawful purposes and terroristic threats. Court moved as part of effort to ease overcrowding at county justice complex.
The new location for Bergen County Central Municipal Court will open Tuesday in Hackensack, one step in a major renovation of the county’s justice complex. Officials will open the new location at 71 Hudson Street. The county has been renovating the building since last year. Central Municipal Court is unique to Bergen and generally handles summonses issued by county agencies. The busy court was located in the Bergen County Courthouse on Main Street. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan has announced plans to rehabilitate the historic courthouse and surrounding justice complex. John L. Euwan Kim of Fort Lee School No. 1 won for her grade level in a county-wide contest
Euwan Kim, a fourth grade student at Fort Lee School No. 1, was named the winner for her grade level in the 2012 “Don’t Stand by for Bullying” contest sponsored by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. The contest, which was open to all county students, challenged entrants to “tell us how you won’t just stand by and let bullying happen.” Elementary school students submitted posters, middle school students sent in PowerPoint presentations and high school students made videos. Schools chose their top entries for each grade level. The final voting was conducted online at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office website. County on pace for 8 percent drop in overtime costs.
Employees at the Bergen County Jail racked up $1.72 million worth of overtime in 2010, more than twice as much as the majority of county departments. The four highest overtime recipients in the county were corrections officers, including two men who boosted their six-figure salaries by more than 60 percent by collecting a combined $129,516 in extra pay. In fact, jail workers dominated the rankings of county overtime earners in 2010, with five corrections officers in the top 10, and 10 in the top 20. “We came in with the intent to do something about that,’’ said Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino, who took office in January.
