Sandy Victims Forced to Wait Out Political 'Games,' Govs Say

Christie, Cuomo, local representatives react to Congress shelving $60 billion in recovery money.

Officials from states hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy blasted Congressional Republicans on Wednesday for not passing a bill that would fund $60 billion toward recovery efforts. In a release, Sen. Frank Lautenberg said the move denies aid to "families, communities and businesses that were devastated by one of the worst storms to ever hit the United States. “Denying emergency aid to Superstorm Sandy victims is a new low for House Republicans," Lautenberg said. Lautenberg said Congress should put partisan politics aside, as it does for other disaster recovery efforts, and "extend a helping hand to help them get back up." "Helping struggling families recover from disasters has never been a partisan issue in Washington and it never should be," …

National Guard Maintains A Large Presence in Sandy-Impacted Areas

Fewer than 100 Guardsmen and women remain from the initial 1,000, though they still provide a valuable service.

It’s Sunday afternoon. A few hours ago guardsmen were stationed along the barrier island, huddled in the rain around makeshift fire pits or loaded up in Humvees touring the still-devastated landscape. Now, they’ve taken their positions in armchairs in front of the big screen to watch with mild interest as the Cowboys take on the Bengals. More than a month ago the National Guard was deployed in New Jersey to help assist with evacuations prior to Hurricane Sandy. They remained for the immediate aftermath to assist with search and rescue. Finally, what was anticipated as only a three to five day deployment for observation and surveillance has turned into a two-month stay. The continued presence of the now less than 100 National Guardsmen and …

Fort Lee BOE to Cut Into Spring Recess, Make Storm Repairs After Sandy

The Fort Lee Board of Education’s regular business meeting is Monday at 8 p.m. in the Fort Lee High School library.

Most of Fort Lee’s public schools were damaged to some extent during Hurricane Sandy, and students lost a total of six school days because of damage to buildings and widespread, long-lasting power outages. On Monday, the Fort Lee Board of Education will vote on resolutions approving emergency repairs to the buildings and outlining how the school district will meet the state-mandated 180 school days this school year. After Sandy, Fort Lee schools were forced to close from Oct. 29 to Nov. 5, a total of six school days. The 2012-2013 school calendar has already been amended once after the storm to reflect school being open when it had been scheduled to be closed on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 because of the cancellation of the NJEA’s Atlantic City …

How dare a qualified tradesman do business without paying homage to the state! Don't they know paying taxes are not enough? They need to pay the state not only for starting their company, but for the right to business too. How do people expect all those well paid state employees to keep their jobs? Superstorm Sandy made an impact on approximately two-thirds of the state, according to results from a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday.
