Fort Lee to Light Up For Holidays Thursday, Saturday

The annual community tree lighting celebration is Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Fort Lee Community Center, while the annual community Menorah lighting is Saturday at 6 p.m. on Main Street and Lemoine/Schlosser.

The Christmas season in Fort Lee and Hanukkah in Fort Lee and around the world start this week, and the borough has two events planned to mark the occasions and kick off the holidays locally. Fort Lee’s annual community tree lighting at the Fort Lee Community Center will take place Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., and Mayor Mark Sokolich, who previously promised it would be “extra-special” this year, said Wednesday he’s expecting as many as 1,500 to 2,000 people. Sokolich and borough administrator Peggy Thomas went through what Sokolich called a “dry-run” Wednesday evening at the community center, and the mayor liked what he saw. “It almost brought tears to my eyes,” Sokolich said. “The lights, the ornaments—it just looks so professional. It’s …

Fort Lee certainly bit my expectation and though there is always room for improvement, this one would be a very little one. Decoration was superb, world class level, snow was a very sweet touch. Fire pods not only added needed warmth, it also visually ignited festivities.   more ›

Fort Lee Kicks Off Holidays This Week, BOE to Hold Private Session

The Week Ahead: a look at just some of what’s going on in Fort Lee this week.

By the end of the week, there will be no doubt, as you travel around Fort Lee that the holiday season is here. Fort Lee’s annual holiday tree lighting event at the Fort Lee Community Center will take place on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich has promised that this year’s festivities kicking off the holiday season locally will be “extra-special” for children in the borough who have had their last two Halloweens disrupted—or as was the case in 2012, outright cancelled—because of unexpectedly severe weather events like Sandy and a very early snowstorm. Then on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. the first night of Hanukkah, Congregation Gesher Shalom will host Fort Lee’s annual community Menorah lighting at the “triangle”—…

I hate to nitpick but why can't a Xmas tree be called that instead instead of a holiday tree. Maybe we need to call the Menorah a candle stick lighting. Fair is fair in this silly annual game & why politics are such a pain.   more ›

Fort Lee Mayor Promises ‘Extra Special’ Holiday Tree Lighting This Year

The annual event, which this year is Dec. 6 at the community center, should be more fun than ever, especially for kids who lost Halloween to Sandy, Mayor says.

Fort Lee officials have announced that the borough’s annual holiday tree lighting event at the Fort Lee Community Center will take place on Dec. 6, and the mayor says it’s going to be an “extra special” event. “In the face of all that we’ve had to confront over the last several weeks, we’re going to try and have a family- and friend- and community-filled distraction and enjoy commemorating the holiday season with the whole community,” Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said. “You may rest assured it’s going to be extra special this year because of the second year in a row having interrupted Halloween. We promised the kids something special, and we’re going to deliver for them.” Halloween was essentially cancelled this year after Hurricane Sandy …

Fort Lee Lights Up For The Holidays

Fort Lee’s third annual tree lighting celebration

Hundreds of people gathered at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center Thursday evening for the borough’s third annual holiday tree lighting celebration. The event was complete with a DJ, hot chocolate and other treats, fake snow, a visit from Santa and, of course, the lighting of Fort Lee’s roughly 25-foot holiday tree. “Every time we do something like this, there’s a lot of volunteers, and there’s a lot of people that help us,” Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said, addressing the many children and families gathered in front of the stage built to look like a sleigh. “And without volunteers, and without people helping the community, a lot of this is not possible.” The tree was donated by Robert and David Caffaso of Cafasso’s Fairway Market …

Early Mayor and Council Meeting, Holiday Tree Lighting Thursday

Fort Lee Mayor and Council to vote on expanding Redevelopment Area 5 at an early meeting before tree lighting at the community center

The Fort Lee Mayor and Council will take up the issue of expanding Redevelopment Area 5 by about two-thirds of an acre Thursday, when the governing body meets for an early executive session in advance of the borough’s third annual holiday tree lighting. The Council is expected to take action on a resolution determining that five parcels of land qualify as an “Area in Need of Redevelopment” in accordance with the Local Redevelopment and Housing Law after the Fort Lee Planning Board held a special public meeting on the matter on Nov. 30. Also on the public portion of the agenda is the introduction of an accompanying ordinance amending the plan for Redevelopment Area 5 to include the properties along the north side of Main Street abutting the…

Before Holiday cheer tonight,I hope to ask two questions on Redevelopment Area 5. 1: Since at least some of this property is owned by the Borough and is outside the scope of the settlement obtained April 2011,is their any consideration being paid to Borough should these properties be given to either developer? 2:I believe Conditional Designation status will be discussed in Executive Session.Does …   more ›

Let There Be Holiday Lights: Borough Plans Annual Tree Lighting

Fort Lee’s third annual tree lighting celebration is Thursday at the community center

Fort Lee’s annual holiday tree lighting ceremony will take place Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center. This year’s holiday celebration promises to be a true community event and one to rival last year’s, when attendance was estimated at more than 400 people who braved frigid temperatures and turned out for hot chocolate and other treats, music, “snow,” a visit from Santa and, of course, the lighting of Fort Lee’s holiday tree. The brainchild of Fort Lee attorney Marc Macri, who plans the annual event with a small group that also includes Mike Maresca of the Fort Lee DPW, Cheryl Weston of the community center, Borough Administrator Peggy Thomas and borough technician Sam Ghali, the outdoor tree lighting …
