School ‘Spirit,’ Pride on Rise at Fort Lee High School, Say Seniors

Thanks to close cooperation among FLHS cheerleaders, coaches, the marching band, boosters and the “Fort Lee Fanatics,” as well as a tight-knit senior class, school spirit is increasing, insiders agree.

The culture of Fort Lee High School sports is changing, from the way all the sports teams pull for one another, to the way the cheerleaders, the marching band and the football team have come together to bring spirit back to the school. So says Billy Straub, a 1992 graduate of Fort Lee High School and current head football coach, and student athletes and others seem to agree. “This place is changing, and you guys may not realize it, but I think the seniors that are here are the reason it’s changing, and it’s changing for the better,” Straub told a group of senior athletes he gathered in a high school classroom after the FLHS Athletic Booster Club recently hosted a “Senior Appreciation Night” for fall athletes. “Maybe our seasons weren’t as …

Roundup: The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Fort Lee Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen high school sports teams.

Football The Bridgemen improved to 2-5 on the season Friday night, when they defeated Englewood during their last home game of the season. Fort Lee picked up the 19-0 win during the seniors’ last game at home. Frankie Goris had 12 carries and two touchdowns for the Bridgemen. Quarterback Mario Jacovino scored an 8-yard touchdown, Tyler Sanders had 13 tackles and Justin Parra chipped in with 6 tackles and 3 sacks. Head coach Bill Straub was very happy for his seniors on such a special night. “It was a great team win, and I am so happy for the seniors to get the win they deserve on senior night,” Straube said. Fort Lee Athletic Awards Banquet Honors Standout Student Athletes

Many people turned up last week to show their appreciation for the student athletes of Fort Lee High School

More than 340 people gathered at The Fiesta in Wood Ridge on June 8 to show their appreciation for those Fort Lee students involved in athletics along with their studies. Numerous awards and honors were given out, and Fort Lee Superintendent of Schools Raymond Bandlow and high school principal Priscilla Church addressed the crowd. The Nicholas Revello Award was given to basketball player Lindsey Clesmere. The award is given to an athlete who displays teamwork, sportsmanship and someone who is an excellent teammate and a great person inside the classroom, in the hallways and on the field.
