Homeowners can apply now for assistance from the volunteer organization
North Jersey was forever changed after Hurricane Sandy hit the area, devasting homes in towns like Little Ferry, Moonachie, Hackensack, South Hackensack and Carlstadt. Now the Bergen County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, based out of Oradell, is looking to institute a five-year relief plan to assist homeowners rehabilitate, rebuild and return to their homes. Federal representatives on hand to help with disaster assistance at new Bergen County center, the county executive announced Thursday.
Officials have opened a Disaster Recovery Center at the county administration building in Hackensack, allowing storm-battered residnets to get assistance in applying for Sandy recovery programs. The center will be staffed with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Small Business Administration, according to Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan's Office. Information on state and federal programs, disaster assistance and low-interest mitigation loans for private non-profits and businesses will be available. Busy crossing between Teaneck and Hackensack needs extensive repairs, officials say. County reviewing state report on bridge's condition.
One lane in each direction on the Anderson Street Bridge was closed Tuesday after a state consultant's inspection found the busy link between Teaneck and Hackensack would need extensive repairs, officials said. The lane closures will remain in place indefinitely, along with a 15-ton weight restriction forcing eleven bus routes to be detoured to Route 4. Concrete barriers were installed to keep traffic away from weakened areas of the four lane bridge, according to Bergen County Public Works Director Joe Crifasi. The bridge's condition does not pose a safety risk, but the inspection found the structure was in need of "immediate attention," Crifasi told Patch. Weight limit imposed on Anderson Street Bridge after review finds major repairs needed, officials say.
Eleven bus routes serving about 2,000 riders have been detoured indefinitely off the Anderson Street Bridge between Teaneck and Hackensack after officials ordered a 15-ton weight restriction on the busy crossing, NJ Transit said Monday. A state review found the 41-year-old bridge required significant repairs, prompting Bergen County officials to lower the allowed weight limit, according to Jeanne Baratta, chief of staff at the county executive's office. The county alerted NJ Transit of the weight limit Monday afternoon, a transit agency spokeswoman said. Judge and officer injured in falls; courthouse closed for remainder of the day, official says.
HACKENSACK - A 27-year-old New Milford man was arrested Monday after he broke a water pipe at the Bergen County Courthouse, causing significant damage and forcing the building to close for the remainder of the day, the sheriff’s office said. Benjamin Blohm was caught on camera kicking the third floor pipe until it broke, according to Bergen County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Richard Moriarty. Sheriff's officers reviewed security footage and arrested Blohm at the courthouse. Blohm was in the building for a drug court appearance, Moriarty said. A Superior Court judge and a sheriff’s officer slipped on the wet ground and were both treated for injuries, Moriarty said. The judge was taken to an area hospital, but his condition was not …

The former Lodi man who allegedly played a guiding role in the firebombings of Jewish synagogues earlier this year has pleaded not guilty to new charges that he conspired to kill the assistant prosecutor handling his case, authorities said Thursday. Aakash Dalal, 20, who had been attending Rutgers University and has a New Brunswick address, plotted to obtain a gun and murder Assistant Prosecutor Martin Delaney after he made bail, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Court moved as part of effort to ease overcrowding at county justice complex.
The new location for Bergen County Central Municipal Court will open Tuesday in Hackensack, one step in a major renovation of the county’s justice complex. Officials will open the new location at 71 Hudson Street. The county has been renovating the building since last year. Central Municipal Court is unique to Bergen and generally handles summonses issued by county agencies. The busy court was located in the Bergen County Courthouse on Main Street. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan has announced plans to rehabilitate the historic courthouse and surrounding justice complex. John L. Residents, community leaders call for justice after fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager.
More than 600 people donned hoodie sweatshirts and marched in Englewood Sunday to show solidarity with the family of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida. The marchers traveled from Mount Calvary Baptist Church to MacKay Park in near silence to protest the killing.
