Senior wins the district championship in the 600 meter run
Chances are, at some point in your life, the thought of being a champion has crossed your mind. The moment can take a long time to achieve, but it may take even longer to ever forget that second when someone is elevated to the level of champion. Senior track star Nancie Sophias took that step this week, winning the 600 meter run at the Big North Division Championships in New York City. The accomplishment was even more memorable for Sophias because last season she fell just short of the same honor. During the indoor track season of 2009, Sophias finished in second place in the same race in Bergen County, but this year had a different ending. And it almost never happened. Both the boys' and girls' teams finish in 3rd place overall.
Entering one of the most historic running facilities in the country, the Fort Lee co-ed indoor track team was looking to make some history of their own Monday. Coach Ed Garrison hoped to see the boys and girls squads leave the 168th Street Armory with a Big North Division Championship, but both teams finished third among their league opponents. Despite not winning Division 7 on either side, Fort Lee was very pleased with the overall outcomes. “They definitely have gone beyond our expectations,” said coach Garrison of his team. For the girls, Westwood won with a final total of 192 points, followed by Ridgefield Park with 98 points. Nancie Sophias shines and is named Fort Lee’s athlete of the meet.
The Fort Lee indoor track team competed at the Ridgewood Winter Games Friday and came away from the event with an impressive haul of medals. The games began with the 55 meter dash on one side of the gym, while the 55 meter hurdles started on the opposite side of the Rothman Center. Fort Lee was successful in both events, claiming four medals in the earlygoing. Ashley Jenq placed fifth in the freshman girls' 55 meter dash, while Shawn Bei finished third in the freshman boys' 55 meter hurdles. “[Ashley] has placed in the 55 meter freshman dash in every race this season,” said coach Ed Garrison. “We have a lot of first year runners that are stepping up.” That includes junior Nikola Gogic, who is running for the first time this season.
