Fort Lee Custodians Keep Schools Clean, Safe for Students

Joe Cappellini, the union representative for the custodians in the district, talks about the integral role he and his colleagues play in education, even with reduced manpower.

The Fort Lee school district has 18 custodians, spread across all six public schools, including two maintenance men and one head custodian. It used to be that there were closer to 50, but a couple of years ago, the district let go more than half of them—some retired and some were laid off. But that hasn’t changed Lewis F. Cole Middle School custodian Joe Cappellini’s approach to his job, and he has hopes that as workers retire, the district will be able to bring back at least some of his former colleagues, noting that two people have already returned that way. “It’s not bad,” Capellini said of the resulting reorganization of the custodial staff. “They did a whole rotation. They shift people around to different schools.” At Fort Lee High …

Athlete, Dancer, Coach: New PE Teacher ‘Meant to be in Fort Lee’

Tara Trovato is in her first year teaching Physical Education at Fort Lee School No. 2

Tara Trovato is one of the newest teachers in the district, but the first-year Physical Education teacher at Fort Lee School No. 2 is certainly not new to teaching. Trovato, who grew up in Totowa and now lives in Elmwood Park, is currently in her seventh year as an educator, having taught sixth, seventh and eighth grade Health and P.E. at Park Middle School in Scotch Plains and then seventh and eighth grade Phys. Ed. at Roosevelt Middle School in West Orange before her arrival at School 2 this year. “I’m just new to the district,” Trovato said. “But my experience is in middle school; this is my first elementary school.” A 2005 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where she earned a dual certification in Health and Physical Education …

Lady Bridgemen Head Basketball Coach On Teaching Kindergarten

Fort Lee School No. 1’s Stacie Zafiris also coaches varsity softball

Stacie Zafiris is a Kindergarten teacher at Fort Lee School No. 1. She’s also the head coach of the Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen varsity basketball team and an assistant coach with the varsity softball team. “For most people hearing that, it is definitely a little bit unusual,” Zafiris said. “But what most people don’t know about me is that I actually student taught at the high school in 2004. So I actually wanted to originally teach History to high school students.” A senior in college at the time, Zafiris said there were no openings at the high school when she graduated in 2005 so she started substitute teaching in the Fort Lee School District and in Tenafly and coaching basketball in Tenafly. After making the rounds as a substitute teacher …

From Clear Channel To The Classroom: Fort Lee’s Newest Kindergarten Teacher

Karen Simone was hired as a full-time teacher at School No. 1 in late August, when increased enrollment prompted the need for a fifth Kindergarten teacher at the school

Fort Lee School No. 1 teacher Karen Simone, who was approved by the Fort Lee Board of Education at the end of August as the school’s fifth Kindergarten teacher, may be new to her classroom, but she’s definitely not new to the school district. In fact, she’s a product of the Fort Lee School system, having attended School No. 4, Fort Lee Middle School and Fort Lee High School, from which she graduated in 2000. Recently married and now living in Palisades Park, Simone was born in Brooklyn and also lived briefly in North Bergen, but she said she considers Fort Lee home. Simone has also worked in the school district for the past couple of years, having substituted for extended periods for teachers on maternity or medical leave after making the …

New Middle School Assistant Principal Makes Big Transition

A guidance counselor in the Fort Lee School District since 2005, Lauren Glynn is now second in command at Lewis F. Cole

Lauren Glynn is the new assistant principal at Lewis F. Cole Middle School, but she’s far from new to the school district. The Rockland County native, who graduated from SUNY Oswego before receiving her Masters in School Counseling from Long Island University (Rockland campus) and her Administrative Certificate from SUNY New Paltz, is starting her seventh school year in Fort Lee. Glynn started at the middle school as a guidance counselor in 2005. “I was in this building for a few years, and then I moved up to the high school,” she said. “I was up there for two years, and then I came back here. So I’ve been here before. I know most of the staff. There are only a few new people that came in while I was gone.” Glynn was kind enough to sit …

I am over it. I have success in my life, which I am a sportswriter so there is no reason for me to bitter. I have a career that I am focused on, and I am doing quite well. I am just posting an opinion, which is what the comment section is all about, Tina. It's not a personal attack. It's a fair point to make about how a popular student in high school in Tara can relate to a person who might …   more ›
