Fort Lee to Beef Up Police Presence in Schools, Hire Two Extra Officers

Fort Lee mayor says he scheduled a meeting about a week-and-a-half ago for Wednesday to include borough, school and police officials, and that he anticipates hiring two full-time school resource officers.

Fort Lee officials plan to meet with school and police officials Wednesday, and Mayor Mark Sokolich anticipates announcing soon after that two full-time school resource officers will be included in the next round of police hires. Sokolich said he called the meeting about a week-and-a-half ago after consulting with Fort Lee Police Chief Keith Bendul. The mandatory meeting Wednesday afternoon will include Sokolich, Bendul, Deputy Police Chief Timothy Ford, Superintendent of Schools Steven Engravalle and other school administrators, borough administrator Peggy Thomas and Council liaisons. “The meeting is devoted solely and exclusively to school safety,” Sokolich said, calling the likely plan to hire two additional police officers to work in …

Amato Addresses School Security, Coping With Tragedy In Holiday Message

Fort Lee’s Interim Superintendent of Schools released a holiday message on the school district’s website, also mentioning her time in the role and calling it “the most rewarding experience” of her career.

Fort Lee’s interim superintendent of schools says students in the school district have been coping with the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. in the days since the deadly shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in part by paying tribute to the victims. In a holiday message to members of the Fort Lee school community posted on the Fort Lee Public School District’s website, Interim Superintendent of Schools Sharon Amato said she has also heard “many excellent suggestions” on how school officials can improve security. She said she would take those suggestions into consideration moving forward. “The tragedy in [Newtown] has shaken us to the core; but it has also helped us come together as a …

Fort Lee Assistant Superintendent Resigns

Keith Lockwood’s duties as Anti-Bullying Coordinator and Affirmative Action Officer will be taken over by Tammi Gil and Cheryl Balletto respectively.

The Fort Lee Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to accept the resignation effective Nov. 26, 2012, of Keith Lockwood from his positions as Assistant Superintendent, Anti-Bullying Coordinator and Affirmative Action Officer. The walk-in resolution was accompanied by two others the BOE approved at its regular business meeting appointing current human resources officer Tammi Gil Anti-Bullying Coordinator and business administrator Cheryl Balletto Affirmative Action Officer—both with no stipend—to replace Lockwood in the roles. The decision comes just two weeks after Lockwood, who was new to the district this year, was appointed to the two additional positions to replace Sharon Amato after she was appointed interim superintendent on …

This kind of reasoning is what I want to hear more of, I know we are out there, we just have to gel and over come some of the past! Shawn and Art keep it up! Reasonable expectations of 'transparency' (I prefer ''forthright explanations'', which is not done either, the BOE needs to define it's role and understand processes better) of what can be explained is what we need to accept. In that …   more ›

Fort Lee Superintendent to Take Leave of Absence Until January

With Steven Engravalle out for the next two months on medical leave, Sharon Amato will run the day-to-day operations of the Fort Lee Public School District, serving as Interim Superintendent after board approval Monday.

The Fort Lee Board of Education Monday approved a nearly two-month leave of absence for Superintendent Steven Engravalle for medical reasons and appointed Sharon Amato Interim Superintendent of Schools during his absence. Engravalle’s leave of absence is effective Nov. 7 and continues until Jan. 2, 2013, according to the walk-in resolution the school board approved 5-0 with one abstention. Amato, whose status as interim superintendent is effective for the same period and was approved unanimously by the board, called the appointment “truly an honor and a privilege.” “I have spent more time in my life working in the Fort Lee schools than I’ve done anything else so you certainly have my commitment to the students and the members of the …

"The School Board had made some poor decisions in selecting Superintendents." --Thomas A Bennett That gets my nomination for understatement of the century! It's obviously the school board that's the underlying problem, by hiring a long parade of losers. They bear full responsibility for the Engravallle debacle, the Bandlow debacle, the Collabro debacle, and for the fact that, given their record …   more ›

Power At Fort Lee Schools In, Out All Day, Superintendent Says

Fort Lee school officials had to deal with multiple power outages in multiple schools Wednesday but managed to get the kids through a full day--their first in a long time.

Wednesday was supposed to be a “return to normalcy,” as Fort Lee’s Superintendent of Schools called it, for students in the district after seven days away from their classrooms, classmates, lessons and teachers. The devastation and widespread power outages, downed trees and wires in the borough Hurricane Sandy left in its wake had prevented schools from opening all of last week, in addition to this Monday. Then came Tuesday, which was Election Day. But Wednesday didn’t quite work out to be a “normal” school day for Fort Lee students on their first day back. “We did have quite an eventful day with power going in and out in multiple schools all day,” said Superintendent Steven Engravalle. At about 12:45 p.m., Fort Lee School No. 3 went down…
