Police say similar scams—often perpetrated on the elderly and unaware—are fairly common in Fort Lee.
An 85-year-old Fort Lee woman was bilked out of nearly $2,000 by a scam artist who claimed he could fix a dent in her car on the cheap, according to borough police. The woman was driving south on Lemoine Avenue when a male driver pulled up beside her and told her that the door of her vehicle was dented, according to Fort Lee Police Captain Thomas Ottina. The man, later identified as 36-year-old Rocky Davida of Lodi, then told the 85 year old that he could fix the damages cheaply and persuaded her to pull into the Washington Bridge Plaza. It’s there that police say Davida offered to repair the dents for $900 and the elderly woman apparently assented. Cops say Davida’s wife and child then distracted the victim for nearly an hour as Davida …

Police arrested the man, who Leonia Police had been searching for, on 12th Street for lewdness Tuesday evening.
A 42-year-old man was arrested for lewdness Tuesday evening in Fort Lee after he approached a 12-year-old Leonia girl while nude in his minivan, police say. Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Leonia police lieutenant Tom Rowe said, the “completely naked” man pulled alongside a 12-year-old girl walking along Broad Avenue in Leonia. The victim ran from the car and straight to the police department to report the incident. The department broadcasted a description of the car to surrounding towns, and Fort Lee Officer Ralph Liquori found the car on 12th Street less than an hour later, its driver shirtless, according to police. Police say that when Liquori went to pull the minivan over, the driver could be seen pulling up his pants. The man was brought to …

The program offers residents the opportunity to anonymously turn in unused prescription drugs.
The DEA will bring “Operation Take Back” to Fort Lee on Saturday for the sixth time in three years. Residents will have the opportunity to anonymously turn in unused prescription drugs, which both the federal agency and local police encourage as a way to prevent the accidental overdoses and abuse of potentially caused by dated prescriptions left in home medicine cabinets. “The more medicine we get that isn’t being used, the less likely it is to end up on the street,” police chief Keith Bendul said. He added that disposing of medication by flushing it down the toilet or throwing it in the garbage poses its own public safety and environmental hazards, and that the best way to rid the house of unused prescriptions is through this regular …

A 29-year-old New York man faces multiple charges after he drove through a red light and led police to discover a gun and multiple types of ammo, police say.
Fort Lee cops arrested a Bronx man Monday after a traffic stop revealed that the man was in possession of a Lorcin .380 caliber handgun loaded with hollow-point bullets. Officer Ralph Liquori stopped a white 2013 Toyota Corolla with a Florida registration at approximately 6:35 p.m. Monday after he saw the vehicle blow a red light from the Kelby Street ramp onto Fletcher Avenue northbound, police said. When Liquori approached the driver, the officer observed an open bottle of Guinness in the center console and detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, according to police. The driver of the vehicle, 29-year old Louis Snyder, consented to a search of his vehicle and police found the fully loaded handgun in a gym …

Two-day campaign raises driver awareness at pedestrian crossings.
Fort Lee Police issued 106 summonses to drivers who failed to stop for a decoy cop dressed in plainclothes who crossed a marked crosswalk during their two day 'cops in crosswalks' detail this week. New Jersey's state crosswalk laws require drivers to "stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk." Fort Lee received a $15,000 grant to participate in the Department of Highway and Traffic Safety's 'Cops in Crosswalks' Decoy Program this spring. The program places plainclothes police officers as decoys in designated crosswalks to enforce New Jersey's crosswalk laws that are designed to protect pedestrians. Fort Lee had four pedestrian fatalities in 2012 and over 60 struck pedestrians. There has …

Despite a flashing yellow light, orange cones and a lined pedestrian crosswalk, few drivers stop for pedestrian decoy cop on Hudson Terrace.
The Fort Lee Police Department set up a pedestrian decoy cop at the busy intersection of Hudson Terrace and Central Road Friday morning to enforce their pedestrian safety initiative. "One struck pedestrian is one too many," Fort Lee Deputy Police Chief Tim Ford told Patch. Which is why Fort Lee is participating in the Department of Highway and Traffic Safety's 'Cops in Crosswalks' Decoy Program this spring. Fort Lee received a $15,000 grant to fund the cost of paying police officers who participate in the program--from decoys to ticket writers. Drivers who failed to stop to allow the decoy cop to cross at the pedestrian crosswalk were asked to pull over where they were issued a traffic violation that carries a fine of $230 and adds two …
Two Fairview men were arrested and charged with possession.
Cops arrested two Fairview men Tuesday after a traffic stop, allegedly confiscating heroin, drug paraphernalia and a complete set of 1987 Topps baseball cards from their vehicle. Detective Timothy Cullen of the Fort Lee Narcotics Unit stopped a Ford Mustang on Bergen Boulevard just after noon for speeding and spotted a syringe on the floor of the vehicle, police said. Cops said they found three glassine envelopes of suspected heroin on the driver, Derik Morin, 32, and 17 glassine envelopes of suspected heroin on the passenger, Paul Bussanich, 25. Both men gave police conflicting stories about their travels to New York City when questioned individually, cops said. A search of the vehicle also turned up a complete set of 1987 Topps …

As part of an initiative to inform and educate the residents of Fort Lee, Chief of Police Keith Bendul and members of the Fort Lee Police Department held another in its series of "Be Seen, Be Safe" Pedestrian Safety Programs at the Fort Lee Community Center Wednesday evening. Open to residents of all ages, the seminar highlighted the continued problem with accidents involving pedestrians over the course of the past year. Bendul discussed initiatives he has put in place to help raise awareness on pedestrian safety, such as the distribution of flashing clip on reflectors, ice scrapers and reflective umbrellas that when not opened, can still be carried to make pedestrians visible to drivers at night. In addition to providing safety …
