Fort Lee Community Center Lights it Up Blue for Autism

April is Autism Awareness Month. Share your stories.

April is Autism Awareness month, and iconic landmarks, such as the George Washington Bridge, “went blue” in support, as part of the Light It Up Blue initiative organized by Autism Speaks. Locally, the Fort Lee Community Center is being lit up blue each night throughout April in recognition of Autism Awareness Month, thanks to Fort Lee Councilman Harvey Sohmer, who recommended the borough do something to acknowledge those who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. Sohmer told Patch, “Everyone in this world is touched by someone who has autism and I thought it would be something nice for the town to do.” Sohmer said he was inspired by a close friend whose grandson is autistic and a student of the Alpine Learning Group. “She had mentioned …

After Sandy, Holidays in Fort Lee Get Off to Brighter Start

The borough’s annual community tree lighting celebration was Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center, and the mayor said Fort Lee outdid itself this year, especially after the devastating storm.

Hundreds of Fort Lee residents showed up “on the green” behind the Fort Lee Community Center on a chilly evening Thursday for the borough’s annual community tree lighting celebration. The event was complete with a holiday village, a trackless train, cartoon characters like Elmo and Scooby-Doo, a snow machine, a confetti machine, a live DJ, refreshments and a visit from Santa, who was escorted in by the Fort Lee Fire Department. Of course, the evening also included the lighting of the 35-foot tree, along with the community center’s outdoor stage, after a countdown led by the Fort Lee Mayor and Council. Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, who previously promised the event would be “extra-special” this year because of Superstorm Sandy and local …

I attended with my two children and we really enjoyed it. I think the festivities took a lot of hard work and it really showed. I would like to thank everyone involved to make this a joyous holiday season. with our community just having dealt with a hurricane, many having financial difficulties, or just looking to find a little cheer, this was an event that started the holiday season off right!   more ›

Fort Lee to Light Up For Holidays Thursday, Saturday

The annual community tree lighting celebration is Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Fort Lee Community Center, while the annual community Menorah lighting is Saturday at 6 p.m. on Main Street and Lemoine/Schlosser.

The Christmas season in Fort Lee and Hanukkah in Fort Lee and around the world start this week, and the borough has two events planned to mark the occasions and kick off the holidays locally. Fort Lee’s annual community tree lighting at the Fort Lee Community Center will take place Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., and Mayor Mark Sokolich, who previously promised it would be “extra-special” this year, said Wednesday he’s expecting as many as 1,500 to 2,000 people. Sokolich and borough administrator Peggy Thomas went through what Sokolich called a “dry-run” Wednesday evening at the community center, and the mayor liked what he saw. “It almost brought tears to my eyes,” Sokolich said. “The lights, the ornaments—it just looks so professional. It’s …

Fort Lee certainly bit my expectation and though there is always room for improvement, this one would be a very little one. Decoration was superb, world class level, snow was a very sweet touch. Fire pods not only added needed warmth, it also visually ignited festivities.   more ›

Fort Lee Mayor Promises ‘Extra Special’ Holiday Tree Lighting This Year

The annual event, which this year is Dec. 6 at the community center, should be more fun than ever, especially for kids who lost Halloween to Sandy, Mayor says.

Fort Lee officials have announced that the borough’s annual holiday tree lighting event at the Fort Lee Community Center will take place on Dec. 6, and the mayor says it’s going to be an “extra special” event. “In the face of all that we’ve had to confront over the last several weeks, we’re going to try and have a family- and friend- and community-filled distraction and enjoy commemorating the holiday season with the whole community,” Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich said. “You may rest assured it’s going to be extra special this year because of the second year in a row having interrupted Halloween. We promised the kids something special, and we’re going to deliver for them.” Halloween was essentially cancelled this year after Hurricane Sandy …

Fort Lee Community Center Now ‘Charging Center,’ 70 Percent of Residents Without Power

The community center will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until the curfew is lifted; officials say power may not be restored for at least five more days.

A charging center has been set up at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center for residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy, as an estimated 70 percent of the town remained without power Wednesday, officials said. The charging center is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week and has tables where people can work on their laptops, pens, paper, refreshments and coffee; they’re also showing movies, according to Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich. The only thing they’re asking is that people bring they’re own adaptors. “We made it like an office center,” Sokolich said, adding that the 6 p.m. closing time is because of the curfew instituted Tuesday as part of Sokolich’s emergency declaration. “As soon as I lift the curfew because PSE&G has killed …

A Bergen County Grand Jury handed up a two-count indictment charging Charles J. Ann with murdering Aena Hong, whom he allegedly ran over with his car multiple times outside the Fort Lee Community Center in February.

A Fort Lee man was indicted Monday on murder charges in connection with the brutal hit-and-run death of his girlfriend outside the Fort Lee Community Center in February, authorities said. Fort Lee Farmers Market, Others in County Continue Throughout Summer

Photographer Christopher Costa captured these images of the Fort Lee Farmers Market at the Fort Lee Community Center Sunday, July 1, 2012, and there are plenty of others not so far away to check as the season progresses.

In spite of the heat, the annual Fort Lee Farmers Market was bustling Sunday at the Fort Lee Community Center’s plaza area and continues every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Nov. 18. This year's market features some familiar vendors and some new ones, but Tom Meyers of the Fort Lee Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs previously said, "“We may add vendors as the season progresses." "I am quite happy with the variety and the mix of old and new, and the anchor of Stone Pointe Farms always brings our market a crowd of customers who return each week," Meyers said. For Farmers Market enthusiasts, however, there are plenty of others nearby to check out as the summer season continues. "Weekends are a great time to visit the many Farmers …
