County resident fourth child to die from flu in New Jersey, officials say.
The past week has been no kinder to New Jersey residents suffering from the sniffles, cough and chills of the flu, state officials say, and has led to the death of a fourth child in the state, according to an NJ.com report. A 12-year-old Bergen County girl died earlier this month, Dawn Thomas, a state Health Department spokeswoman said in the report. The girl had underlying health conditions. Her name and hometown were not released. The current flu season continues to be one of the worst flu seasons in recent history, state Health Department officials say. Monday's meeting of the Assembly's Health and Senior Services Committee focused on ways the state can help relieve overextended and overwhelmed hospitals and doctors. Physicians and legislators also discussed steps everyone can take to lessen the severity of this flu season. Dr. Shelley Greenman, an emergency medicine physician at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, struck the appropriate note when she said she has never seen anything like the number and range of flu cases that she has encountered this year. Hospital says temporary visitor restrictions in place
A nationwide flu epidemic has prompted Englewood Hospital and Medical Center to issue temporary visitor restrictions, according to a hospital statement. Englewood's emergency room has seen a "surge" of flu-related visits and admissions, with the elderly hardest hit, the statement said. "In response to the growing threat, the Medical Center staff is working around the clock to protect the community, including stocking up on flu-related supplies and testing kits, vaccinating patients and employees and implementing temporary visitor restrictions at the hospital," the hospital said.
