Englewood Parking Dispute Leads to Weapon, Drug Charges

Fort Lee man had pills and pot, police say.

A threat over illegal parking at Englewood's Rock Creek Terrace Housing Complex led police to the discovery of a drug stash and numerous charges against a Fort Lee man, city authorities said Tuesday.  Gregg Michael Weiner, 35, parked in a restricted area when he was visiting a friend at the complex March 27, according to police. He apparently became upset after the complex slapped a parking violation sticker on his car window. Weiner went to the management office, threatened two female employees and caused $5,500 worth of damage to the building before taking off, police said. City detectives drew up warrants stemming from the confrontation.  Police said Weiner was captured Saturday when Englewood Detective Desmond Singh and Patrolman …

Food Pantry Lacking Turkeys, Thanksgiving Donations After Sandy

Englewood’s Center for Food Action is more than 1,000 turkeys short this year, with their annual distribution set to begin Friday, because Sandy forced them to focus their efforts elsewhere.

In a typical year, the Englewood-based Center for Food Action (CFA) distributes more than 3,000 Thanksgiving packages to local families facing the holiday without a meal. But this is anything but a typical year. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, during which CFA was focused on getting food to families without basic necessities like power or heat, the food pantry’s annual Thanksgiving distribution was not a priority, and now it’s in serious jeopardy. Because of the storm, people weren’t donating to the Thanksgiving cause, and with distribution set to begin Friday, the CFA is an estimated 1,000 to 1,200 turkeys short, according to a spokesperson. “We’re looking for a miracle because the storm has overshadowed Thanksgiving, and …

Freeholder Candidates Reach Out to Korean Community At Debate

Republicans Robert Hermansen, an incumbent, and Margaret "Peg" Watkins, and Democratic candidates Steve Tanelli and Tracy Silna Zur debated at the FGS Korean Community Center Thursday evening.

Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) and the Korean American Civic Action Committee hosted a debate with the candidates for Bergen County Freeholder Thursday at the FGS Korean Community Center in Englewood.  Noting that the Korean-American population in Bergen County is nearly 57,000, that 14.5 percent of the county’s population is Asian-American and that 6.3 percent is comprised of Korean-Americans, mostly concentrated in Fort Lee, Palisades Park, Paramus, Leonia, Cliffside Park, Tenafly and Englewood Cliffs, KACE staff attorney and debate moderator Chejin Park said the objective of the debate was twofold. “The two objectives of this debate are to help the Asian-American community make an educated decision at the November general …

Democrat partisanship is how I would summarize the environment at this debate. In particular, from Ms. Zur. As opposed to Freeholder Hermansen and Mayor Watkins who maintained answers that dealt about themselves instead of deflecting to their party. While there Assemblyman Johnson came to watch where he and I had an amicable conversation. Little different from the one where we last met: http://…   more ›

Bergen Deal Site SuburbanMomma Stops Offers

Coupons will be honored until expiration, site says.

SuburbanMomma.com, a coupon website founded by an Englewood woman, has stopped offering deals and will remain online through the end of the year. “As of Monday, October 1st, we discontinued offering daily deals. If you ever bought a deal with us, we thank you for your support, and please know that merchants will continue to honor SuburbanMomma certificates until they expire,” said a message posted on the site Friday, which focused on Bergen County moms. Englewood’s Deborah Leff founded the website in 2010, according to northjersey.com. The report noted Leff started the site when major deal site Groupon was largely focused on New York City discounts. Since then, Groupon and others have upped their North Jersey offerings. “Over the last two …

Facility will serve members from across Bergen County and feature environmentally friendly design.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints broke ground Saturday on an enviromentally friendly state of the art meetinghouse in Englewood, planned to serve members of the Mormon faith from across Bergen County.  The 15,270-square-foot facility is expected to open in early 2014, according to a church news release. Plans call for it to include a chapel, 16 classrooms and offices, along with a gymnasium and underground parking spaces. The new meetinghouse, the release said, will also become Englewood's first building to carry LEED certification, which recognizes the structure's "green" construction.  Earth-friendly building features will include rooftop gardens to increase energy efficiency, a sophisticated water recycling system to …
