Season in Review: Fort Lee Bowling

Daniels represents team in sections and both teams come close to coach's expectations.

With all winter sports seasons having concluded, Fort Lee Patch now takes an in-depth look at how each team fared over the past few months. With the second of five installments, the season in review segment continues with the story of the 2010-2011 Fort Lee bowling team. Before the season started, head coach Dennis Sayer knew that there would be some open spots in his starting lineup due to gradation and other factors, but he also knew that two of those positions would be secured by his returning seniors. Captains Yeliz Inalman and David Daniels were both back for another season on the Fort Lee bowling team this year and Sayer looked to these two for guidance throughout the year. "[David] is taking all of the younger kids and trying to …

Athlete of the Week: Bowler David Daniels

From being a beginner just last season, Daniels is now eyeing the state tournament championship this year.

Senior David Daniels has tried a number of different sports in high school. He has received awards for playing soccer and even participated in basketball, but his current sport, bowling, may be the most enjoyable one of the three. And it almost never came to be. Last year, Daniels elected not to try out for basketball again and was heading into a winter sports season with no team to play for. So one day in chemistry class, all of David’s friends were talking about their after-school activities when his chemistry teacher asked what Daniels had planned. The conversation changed everything for David, as his teacher, who was also the bowling coach, convinced Daniels to give the sport a try. “[Coach Dennis Sayer] said ‘why don’t you come out …

Bowling Coach Preaches, Teaches Chemistry In Classroom, On Lanes

Dennis Sayer builds confidence of students and players.

The word “chemistry” can be defined in many different contexts. It can be a subject in school. It can be a feeling between two or more people, and chemistry can even be seen in the elements of everyday life. For Dennis Sayer, chemistry is all of the above and maybe even more. Mr. Sayer teaches chemistry at Fort Lee High School during the day and then he trades in the “Mister” for “Coach” in the afternoon as he guides the Bridgemen co-ed bowling team. This year marks his 39th in the classroom as a chemistry teacher in a career that Sayer truly treasures. “What I enjoy about chemistry is that it is one of the toughest subjects for kids to understand,” Sayer said. “Everyone is afraid chemistry is so tough with the science part and a lot of …

Last Week's Snowstorm Ruins Fort Lee Bowlers' Routine

A reversal of fortune helps Fort Lee get right back on track.

The holiday season is usually very busy with very little free time. But throw a blizzard into the mix, and all of a sudden, the holidays just became a little bit more hectic. With all of the hours spent with family, and maybe even more hours shoveling, you can see where it may be difficult for a student athlete to find practice time in late December. This is one of the albeit unusual dilemmas that plagued the Fort Lee bowling team during the past week. Many of the co-ed bowlers made plans to practice during vacation but were forced to break from their normal routines due to the circumstances. "I was so used to getting up and going to school, and then bowling after school," said senior bowler David Daniels. "Then you couldn't even go …
