Car Just Misses Crashing into Front Doors of Elementary School

Nobody was injured when a car jumped the curb, and went up the front steps of School No. 1, stopping just short of the doors, officials say.

No one was injured Wednesday morning when a car narrowly missed crashing into the front doors of Fort Lee School No. 1, police and school officials said. Fort Lee resident Fatos Bakir, 34, told police she was trying to park her 2001 Nissan Maxima in the first parking spot in front of the school when she stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, according to Fort Lee police. The car went out of control, hit the front steps of the school and ended up just inches from the front doors, police said. “A parent was parked in this first spot here—the principal’s spot—she was dropping off the kids,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Steven Engravalle, surveying the damage at the school shortly after the crash. “Apparently, she hit the …

I agree, I see so many bad drivers around Fort Lee, its unbelievable. Half of Fort Lee needs to retake the driving test. Just the other day I was behind some woman on Palisades Avenue and she just brakes out of nowhere, my car has that sensor safety system, and I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have stopped if I didn't have it.   more ›

Man Rescued After Car Crashes Into Condominium Pool

Officials said they don’t yet know what caused the crash into a pool on Center Ave., but said the victim was an elderly male

A man described by Fort Lee Fire Department officials as “somewhat elderly” had to be rescued from a Cadillac early Monday afternoon after crashing the car through a concrete block wall and ending up nose first in a swimming pool behind the Biarritz condominium on Center Ave., officials said. Fort Lee Fire Chief Jeff Silver and other members of the fire department were at the scene of the accident, along with Fort Lee police and emergency services, after the driver had been rescued from the partially submerged car and transported away in an ambulance shortly after the accident, which occurred at about 1:30 p.m. “Everybody got here, we pulled him out and the ambulance took him away,” Silver said, adding that the victim appeared to be “…

When my father was in his early 90's, I had to ask him for his keys. It was one of the most difficult things that I have ever had to do. But every time that he drove, he was endangering himself and others. Most children lack the courage to tell a parent the truth when his/her driving skills have reached the danger point. They know that the parent will disagree, resulting in a vociferous argument…   more ›

Car Slams Into Gas Station Convenience Store on Bergen Blvd

Fire officials who investigated the crash at the BP station Thursday say the building was significantly damaged, but that there were no injuries

Fort Lee fire officials say they had to “red tag” the convenience store at the BP Gas Station on Route 46 and Bergen Boulevard Thursday afternoon after a car driven by an elderly man slammed into the building, leaving significant structural damage. “It appeared as if the vehicle ran into the convenience store after running through the gas pump area,” said incident commander, Battalion Chief Mark Sulkov of the Fort Lee Fire Department. “We do not know if he had previously purchased gas or if he didn’t stop for the gas pump.” Sulkov described the driver, whose name was not available, as “a very elderly gentleman,” and said the man refused medical assistance, signing off on the RMA. The force of the crash was enough to break a large plate …
