FLHS Band, Color Guard Uniforms Decades Old, Need Replacement

Parents and students show up at BOE meeting pleading for new uniforms for FLHS Band and Color Guard.

The Board of Education met Wednesday to review the preliminary 2013-2014 school budget before the public presentation on March 28. In reviewing the line items, a plea was made by Board President Jimmy Park and members of the Board, as well as the public, to allocate the $22,645 in special state aide towards the purchase of uniforms for the High School's marching band and color guard. Board of Education member Holly Morell said that the FLHS Color Guard has no uniforms at all--parents go to Party City to buy costumes that look like Color Guard uniforms. Also, there are not enough band uniforms to go around, and those uniforms that exist are worn and in poor condition because they are approximately 20 to 30 years old, according to parents …

Hey Art, Thanks. I was just doing dishes and asking myself why did I respond to this issue in a negative light. I think firstly I wondered why the situation was urgent and parents are pleading for new uniforms. It made me wonder about the history of requesting and why uniforms have been denied all these years. I've been to many meetings in which parents complain that there is no curriculum, and …   more ›

Engravalle Proud of His Accomplishments in Fort Lee, Responds to Critics

Superintendent says that despite his absences, his focus is on the students, teachers and educational quality of Fort Lee's schools.

By all accounts, it would seem that Fort Lee School Superintendent Steven Engravalle is not having a good year, beginning this past summer when his wife, Samantha, died at the age of 40. In an effort to come to terms with that tragedy, he took a two month leave of absence in November. "Tragedy happened and I needed to get my life back in order," Engravalle said. However, Engravalle stressed that it was never his intention to be out of touch with the district during those two months.   "It is my understanding that staff were 'threatened' not to have 'any' contact with me during my leave. As such, I had no idea what was going on for two months. Not a clue," Engravalle said.   Shortly after his return on Jan. 2, there was another death of a …

His leave of absence was effective Nov. 7, 2012 through Jan. 2, 2013. According to the report, since returning to work on Jan. 2, Engravalle has been absent additional days and has missed the last two Board of Education meetings. After the six candidates for three seats on the Fort Lee Board of Education made their opening remarks Tuesday at the Fort Lee Homeowners Association’s Candidates Night at Lewis F. Cole Middle School and given two additional minutes to respond to one another, the questions started. After two failed referendums last year to upgrade and expand the borough’s school system, and continued talk of a potential third, perhaps the first question the candidates had to deal with wasn’t much of a surprise. As read by moderator Alex Floratos, and submitted by a member of the Homeowners Association, the question was as follows: “The second referendum for $89 million was heavily defeated by voters in December. It was very similar to the defeated …
