Scorching heat predicted across North Jersey, officials warn.
Four cooling centers have been opened around Bergen County as the heat index is expected to soar, officials said. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Bergen County from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Heat coupled with humidity is expected to make it feel as hot as 104 degrees. Residents who need rides can call Community Transportation at (201) 368-5955. Gentile has stepped up with double digit performances in every game this season.
In the season of giving, it only seems fitting to start giving away our Athlete of the Week Awards. At the end of every week, Patch will honor one student athlete who performed exceptionally well in his/her sport, while also highlighting their accomplishments. The first Athlete of the Week is sophomore guard Nick Gentile of the Fort Lee Bridgemen varsity boys' basketball team. Nick started the season last Friday with a 17-point performance on the road at Bergenfield and has continued his strong play throughout the following week. On Tuesday, Gentile added another ten points against Cliffside Park before posting a season-high 18 points Thursday night versus Ramapo. Lady Bridgemen drop to 0-2 on the season entering next week's holiday tournament.
The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen lost the continuation of a suspended game against the Bergenfield Lady Bears on Thursday night 65-30. Junior guards Krystal Carvajal and Jessi Corredor invigorated Bergenfield with a combined 32 points as Fort Lee was forced to play from behind, dating all the way back to last Friday. The two teams started the game Dec. 17 but were only able to play a single minute before referee Greg Dobbin collapsed on the court. Dobbin was able to rise to his feet and walk off the court under his own power, but the game was suspended until Thursday with Bergenfield holding a 5-2 advantage.
