Manahawkin Woman Used George Soros' Name in Bergen Ponzi Scheme, Prosecutor Says

Woman claimed she once worked for acclaimed financier George Soros, prosecutors say.

A Manahawkin woman bilked investors out of about $450,000 over six years by claiming their money was going to a hedge fund handled by New York City finance magnate George Soros, the Bergen County Prosecutor said Monday. Dunya Predovan, 57, was arrested Thursday on charges of theft by deception and issuing bad checks after investigators with the Prosecutor’s Office and Alpine police uncovered her Ponzi scheme, Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. Predovan told victims she worked for Soros in the 1980’s and promised a large return on the investments, Molinelli said. Soros, however, had never heard of Predovan and she had not worked for the famed financier, according to the prosecutor. “To date, none of the victims have received …

The Fight Over The Future Of A $22 Million Police Department

Six months since a study recommended sweeping changes to Bergen County Police Department, none have come.

Note: This story was published on Dec. 4, 2011 Six months after a study called for sweeping changes to the Bergen County Police Department, none of the study's central recommendations have been implemented as the fight over the future of the agency continues, a fight that has seemingly chilled the relationship of two county leaders who were allies this time last year.  Bergen County officials are currently waiting for a second report on the county police that’s supposed to be completed early next year, this one by a committee created by County Executive Kathleen Donovan. Critics - most notably Sheriff Michael Saudino, who swept into office with Donovan last November - argue the panel is composed primarily of political appointees rather …

While they disband the Bergen County Police they should also look to cut back the municpal town police department. The municpal town police are glorified security guards making $150,000 to basically write tickets. Teaneck has a excellent Police force but that is rare Englewood, Oakland and Paramus are the worse. Mayor Mark Sokolich not implicated in any wrongdoing, sits on Board of Bank of New Jersey with other prominent locals.

The now-former law partner of the Fort Lee mayor arranged for a pair of drug smugglers to launder their money at a bank where the mayor sits on the board of directors, authorities said Monday. The mayor, attorney Mark Sokolich, has not been implicated in any wrongdoing. His friend and longtime law partner, Marcanton "Marc" Macri, was charged this past weekend with money laundering and facilitation for allegedly setting up large-scale pot dealers with an assistant manager at a local bank, who authorities said converted the $10 and $20 bills into crisp hundreds. The scheme was carried out through a teller at a Bank of New Jersey branch in Fort Lee, said Steve Cucciniello, Chief of Detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Matthew…

County patrols will support local police efforts.

County police and sheriff’s officers have begun 24-hour joint patrols of religious sites across Bergen County in the wake of a string of bias attacks targeting the Jewish community, authorities said Friday. Marked units from the two departments are working in cooperation with local police to check ethnic community centers and religious sites from a range of faiths, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement.  “All community and religious centers will benefit from the strategy, including synagogues, mosques, churches and other houses of worship,” Molinelli said. Law enforcement officials and Jewish community leaders met Thursday in Paramus to discuss the rash of hate crimes. The attacks began in December when synagogues …
