Police Chief Emphasizes Pedestrian Safety As Kids Return To School

In a statement released Wednesday, Fort Lee Police Chief Thomas O. Ripoli urged parents to speak to their children about crossing the street safely and motorists to use extra caution with kids going back to school on Monday.

Fort Lee Police Chief Thomas O. Ripoli issued a statement Wednesday urging parents and motorists to be extra cautious with students returning to school next week. Ripoli, noting a continued problem with accidents involving pedestrians over the summer, said 43 of the borough’s intersections will be manned by crossing guards, and that parents should talk to their children about how to cross the street safely. Ripoli said parents should emphasize to their kids that they need to look out for cars before crossing even though, by law, pedestrians have the right of way. He also said drivers should exercise even greater caution and be on the lookout for pedestrians, especially near schools. “I want to make sure everyone gets to their destination …

School Lunch Standards to Take Effect This Year

Whole grain-rich foods, more fruits and vegetables mandated.

School districts across the country will bring new meaning to the "apple a day" saying this school year as nationally-mandated school lunch standards take effect. Beginning in September, the new lunch standards, introduced in January by First Lady Michelle Obama under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, will be implemented. The standards were created to help fight childhood obesity throughout the nation. According to a press release from the United States Department of Agriculture, the new meal standards are designed to "make the same kinds of practical changes that many parents are already encouraging at home." This involves the inclusion of fruits, vegetables, whole grain-rich foods, low-calorie foods and foods with reduced amounts of …

Lost hope

10:28 pm on Friday, November 23, 2012

Mrs Obama is NOT the driving force behind all this dietary change as many of you have given her credit for... The ADA, more formerly known as the AND has been putting a great deal of pressure on dietary changes across the board. Quite honestly I am NOT an Obama fan; however, I do feel that change is grossly necessary in order to avert more of an obesity epidemic...   more ›

School Construction Snag Won’t Affect Opening of School

Fort Lee school district business administrator says all of the projects approved by referendum and taking place this summer remain “on track” except for air conditioning at Fort Lee High School.

Construction and repair work at the borough’s public schools approved by Fort Lee voters in January remains on track for the opening of school on Sept. 10—with just one exception. “The high school HVAC is our first SNAFU in the projects,” said school district business administrator Cheryl Balletto at Monday’s Fort Lee Board of Education regular business meeting. “All of the coils will be put in; all of the duct work will be put it. But the rooftop unit will not be delivered until October. There is a backlog for getting that unit.” Balletto provided the second school-by-school update of the month on the construction projects taking place over the summer after the school board in January saw its third referendum since September 2010—a scaled…

It is understandable if there are delays due to unforeseen circumstances on a project. Not ordering an essential piece of equipment on a timely basis, claiming there is a backlog on the unit, appears to be an unnecessary …   more ›
