The second annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” game raised more than $700 as of Tuesday night for the American Cancer Society.
The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen basketball team fell to the Dumont Huskies Tuesday evening at Fort Lee High School, 46-35, in a matchup of Big North Conference foes. Fort Lee trailed by scores of 14-1 after the first quarter and 22-6 at halftime but rallied to within as few as eight points after a three-pointer by Ally Long—the senior guard’s second three-point shot of the fourth quarter—late in the game before time ran out on the team’s hopes for an epic comeback. The loss dropped Fort Lee’s record to 8-12 on the season as they prepare for the upcoming state tournament. Earlier in the evening, the freshman girls came from behind to win their game, 28-24, and the JV team lost in a nail-biter, 54-53. But Tuesday night was about more than just …

The “Coaches vs. Cancer” game, pitting Fort Lee against Dumont, is Tuesday evening at FLHS.
The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen varsity girls’ basketball team plays host to the Dumont Huskies Tuesday in the “Coaches vs. Cancer” game to raise money for the American Cancer Society. “The girls are so excited and have worked extremely hard to prepare for the gym to be decorated and support such a wonderful cause,” said head coach Stacie Zafiris. “We are really trying to make it a community event that Fort Lee can be proud of.” It’s the second year the team is hosting an event to raise money for the American Cancer Society; last year the Lady Bridgemen played host to Rutherford High School in an independent matchup, Zafiris said. “This year it is actually a league game against Dumont,” she said. “We actually became involved through a good …

Doctors recommend that women see their doctors once per year for a checkup after reaching age 40
Do it in the shower. Do it while getting ready for bed. Just do it once a month. The American Cancer Society recommends women get into the habit of frequent breast self examinations. Being familiar with their breasts helps women notice any lumps, fluid or changes in size, shape or feel. “I encourage all of you to become an expert about the way your breasts look and feel so you can detect any subtle changes. After all, it’s our body, and we are the ones who have to live with whatever goes wrong with it,” said Jennie Yoon Buchanan, Medical Director of Women’s Imaging Services at Florida Hospitals. It’s even more important that women in their 20s see a doctor for a Clinical Breast Exam every three years – and once a year after turning 40…

Viewfinder is a weekly photo gallery that takes a look at the community through the camera lens. This week, we have images from an annual event that raised nearly $115,000 for the American Cancer Society
Participants in the 2011 George Washington Bridge Challenge walked, ran and biked Sunday across the bridge to raise funds and support the mission of the American Cancer Society. The GWB Challenge—this year in its 24th year—is the only event that shuts down the bridge, according to organizers. After looping on the lower level of the bridge, participants came back into New Jersey and took one of several different scenic courses of varying distances before meeting up at Allison Park in Englewood Cliffs for the George Washington Bridge Challenge Celebration Picnic. This year's winners, according to the website dedicated to the event, which also lists top fundraisers and other information, were as follows: 5 K Run 1. Kyle O'Brien 2. Steve …

Team decorates gym, donates money to American Cancer Society.
After weeks of planning, the Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen set out to accomplish something meaningful with their cancer research benefit game Saturday. Long before the crowd arrived for the noontime game, the team was at the high school, redesigning the gym with pink balloons, banners and streamers by 9:30 a.m. “We decorated the whole [place],” said junior guard Megan Gimson. “It was really close to our hearts because in our coach’s past and our past, we all have a connection.” As the team was playing for the school, the program and themselves, the thought of honoring cancer survivors was weighing on the minds of athletes, such as senior guard Brianna Mattessich. “It’s a really good cause, and it gave us a lot of motivation,” she said. “It’s not…
