Monday is Columbus Day, a federal holiday—meaning no school, among other things, and hopefully, a day off from work; but once we get to Tuesday, Fort Lee’s in for a pretty busy week. Below is a quick look at five things you should know about this week and/or might not want to miss: Number one: (Tuesday, 6 p.m. – Fort Lee School No. 1) BOE Special Meeting The Fort Lee Board of Education meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the School No. 1 library for a special public meeting on the role of acting superintendent. The board will listen to the public for one hour—from 6 to 7 p.m.—and then go into private session. Members of the public will be limited to three minutes each, and the meeting will be capped at one hour. This will be strictly enforced, …

Number one National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, maker of several anti-breast cancer drugs) to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.  Number two In October 1983 the first Race for the Cure was held in Dallas, Texas, where 800 people participated. Below are fives things you should know about registering to vote in November’s General Election: Number one Tuesday, Oct. 18, is the last day for residents to register to vote for the November 8 General Election in the State of New Jersey, according to information posted on the Borough of Fort Lee’s website and originating from the Bergen County Superintendent of Elections. Number two You have to be an American Citizen, at least 18 (on or before November 8, 2011) and a resident of Bergen County by October 18, 2011. County residents can register to vote at the Office of the Superintendent of Elections, at One Bergen County Plaza, Room 380, in Hackensack. The Fort Lee Peace Vigil will march to Leonia Wednesday afternoon/evening to meet their counterparts and participate in International Day of Peace events

International Day of Peace—otherwise known as "Peace Day"—is Wednesday. According to internationaldayofpeace.org, Peace Day “provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date.” The Fort Lee Peace Vigil will mark the occasion Wednesday by marching for peace from the corner of Lemoine Ave. and Bruce Reynolds Blvd., making a right on Main St. and continuing all the way to Broad St. in Leonia for a celebration that includes music, poetry, spoken word and prayer, according to one of the Fort Lee group’s co-founders. Five "Acts of Caring" In Honor of 9/11 Pt. 3

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County suggests area residents mark the 10 year anniversary by serving the community

This year marks the 10th anniversary since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Two years ago, Sept. 11 was named a national day of service in honor of those who lost their lives and the heroes who saved and helped many during the attacks and their aftermath. This year, the goal is for people to log more than 1,000 acts of service to pay tribute to lives lost and to honor the heroes. Once you complete an act of service, you can enter it into a database which will keep track of all the wonderful deeds being done around the county.
