Random inspections to be conducted Friday through Monday, agency says.
Port Authority police officers will be out in force conducting DWI checkpoints starting Friday night and through the holiday weekend, the agency announced Friday. According to the Port Authority Police Department, the PAPD will be at random locations in the evenings and early hours. Drivers will be subject to "random inspections," and police will hand out pamphlets on the dangers of drinking and driving.

Long-time Fort Lee High School English/drama teacher Jodi Etra has been named as the teacher of the year for 2012-2013, according to the school district. A committee comprised of parents, administrators, board members, teachers and union reps voted for Etra, the district wrote on its website. One teacher per building was selected as teacher of the year for their respective schools. They are as follows: Fort Lee High School – Jodi Etra Lewis Cole Middle School - Daniel Distefano School No. 1 – Natasha Morales Hernandez School No. 2 – Sheryl DeLuca School No. 3 – Sandra Klein School No. 4 – Anisa Anderson Interim Superintendent Sharon Amato said they district would recognize the recipients at a future date.

The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey. Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon—a Guinness World Record at over five miles long—to officially declare the shore open. "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. Pilot program will allow NJ Transit bus riders along three routes to take the NY Waterway ferries and buses during the afternoons/evenings, saving 30 minutes on the way home.
A pilot program between NY Waterway and NJ Transit will allow riders along three New Jersey bus routes to bypass the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Lincoln Tunnel, clearing traffic and easing commuting times. According to the transit agencies, commuters along the NJ Transit 156R, 158 and 159R routes along the Palisade Ave/River Road corridor will see reduced times of 30 minutes in the afternoons and evenings. The service will not be available for morning commutes. The program – open to riders with tickets/passes along those routes – is set to begin on June 3, and allows commuters to return home on the NY Waterway ferries and buses at no extra charge. So this does not include the ferry that goes to the Edgewater dock where the free Fort Lee parking authority ferry bus is? You would have to get off the ferry in Weehawken and then take one of the NY Waterway ferry buses to Fort Lee? Doesn't seem to make much sense or save anyone time or money.   more ›

Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. all they talk about is how the boardwalk areas are open but seaside north is a disaster area. the homeowners are still suffering from not getting paid by their insurance and FEMA rules not being finalized yet. Mantoloking is a disaster and is normandy beach. Homeowners are still rebuilding. But the news doesn't report this. It's as if everything is back to normal. What idiots!!!   more ›

President Obama and Gov. Christie will visit the Jersey Shore on Tuesday, according to The Record in Bergen County. This will be Obama's first visit to the area since Oct. 31, just after the storm struck. A full itinerary of the visit was not available. More information can be found here.
