The Success of the BOE Meeting

Glimmers of greatness!

The BOE meeting was a great success for all intents and purposes. The new style of gallery interaction is being respected, we can speak in question or comment form, but must keep it under three minutes. The interaction was respectful and tolerant at every turn. Great, really great questions were asked and many concerns were shared with the BOE and administration. The information exchange was representative of a productive and efficient meeting, and it was brief (less than an hour)!

There were a couple of highlights. You all know that I was glad that Mr. Engravalle was appointed Acting Superintendent. Whew, exhale in relief! Our school system will be able to get through yet another monumental change with stability and direction. I think it's time we offer the support and encouragement for our School District and new leader for the sake of the children. We have all worked in support of the children; now let’s try acting as a whole in support of the children. After all, this change is happening, and energy can be funneled in a positive or negative direction. We have wasted enough time. Let’s see what being positive does!

The time limit for the Acting Superintendent is four months, which I found a bit curious. Not truly surprised, because I think the BOE was smart for attaching their own goal date for finding a permanent Superintendent, and it can always be extended if they do not. Time will tell, and I have complete confidence that Mr. Engravalle is going to be able to prove his competence and exceed expectations.

There were a few highlights in addition to Mr. Engravalle being appointed, and the BOE running a very smooth and effective meeting. The BOE members who initially tabled the Appointment of an acting superintendent explained why they tabled it and apologized for making Mr. Engravalle essentially collateral damage. That was not their intention to cause or join the public, but rather change the culture within the BOE itself. These apologies demonstrated a level of integrity and respect within the BOE I have not witnessed before (oh how that delights me!) Moreover, it was a classy thing to do!

This was Dr. Bandlow’s last BOE meeting, and he spoke gently about his leaving. He endured some tumultuous tides of public approval and displeasure, held steady and took responsibility for his successes and failures. I want to wish him well. The school district is better off for having had him. He came into a mess, and he and his team of administrators have worked diligently to make us better. He poised us for many great things. I am grateful for knowing him and hope his new district is a wonderful success!
