The Week in Sports: A Look Back and a Look Ahead

Basketball records a pair of high-scoring wins and indoor track runs well at the district championships.

From basketball to wrestling, and indoor track to bowling, here is the latest news in Fort Lee sports:

  • The boy’s basketball team finished the week 1-2 with a postponement due to snow. The Bridgemen defeated Mahwah on Monday 60-53 behind a 22 point performance by sophomore guard Nick Gentile. Fort Lee was unable to play Dwight Morrow on Tuesday because of the weather and then lost a close game 62-61 to Ridgefield Park on Thursday. Senior Ryan Ford scored 23 points in his season debut but was injured in Saturday’s loss to Ramsey 60-52. Gentile had a team-high 19 points in the contest. Now, the Bridgemen look ahead to a pair of games this week verse Dumont on Tuesday and at Wood-Ridge on Friday. Both contests will begin at seven o’clock.
  • The Fort Lee girl’s basketball team recorded a win and a loss this week. The Lady Bridgemen routed Westwood 58-28 on Monday as senior guard Brianna Mattessich scored a game-high 18 points. Tuesday’s game on Tuesday was postponed with another snowstorm and Fort Lee returned on Thursday with a 38-25 loss to Ridgefield Park. Mattessich had 14 points in the loss. Then, the Lady Bridgemen started to play Dwight Englewood on Friday but the game was halted due to a fire alarm. After almost an hour, the game was stopped and there are no plans to complete it. A trifecta of games highlight the week ahead for Fort Lee as they playa t Dumont on Tuesday and host Wallington on Thursday at seven o’clock. The Lady Bridgemen will also host Saddle Brook at noon on Saturday.
  • On Monday, both the boys and girls bowling teams lost to Lakeland 5-0. Fort Lee was delayed from playing River Dell on Tuesday with the unpleasant weather and returned to action on Thursday. The Bridgemen were swept by Tenafly 5-0 as the girls lost 3-2 against the Tigers. Senior David Daniels then competed in the NJSIAA Singles Sectional Tournament as the only Fort Lee student athlete to do so.
  • The co-ed indoor track team competed in their division championships this week. Both the boys and girls teams finished in third place in Big North Division 7. Senior and Athlete of the Week Nancie Sophias had one of the many highlights including a first place finish in the 600 meter race. Fort Lee also recorded first place finishes in the 1600 meter run on the boy’s side with junior Jenya Dyagilev (4:52) and Yu Yu Fahmy in the 1000 meter run (2:46.6). The teams compete in the NJSIAA Sectional Group meets this week with the sectionals on Sunday and the individuals next Saturday. Fort Lee will also compete in the Ed Church Invitational on Tuesday as well.
  • The wrestling team was postponed from playing Tenafly on Wednesday due to another snowstorm running their streak to 2 ½ weeks without a match. The Bridgemen competed in a quad meet on Saturday against Becton, Clifton, and Ridgefield Park and are now looking forward to another week ahead. They wrestle at St. Mary’s High School on Wednesday night beginning at seven o’clock before competing in another quad meet on Saturday verse Elmwood Park, Ridgewood and Fair Lawn at 11 A.M.
  • And Monday starts the spring sports season as many high school student athletes will be able to sign-up for their favorite teams. To join the baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track teams, students should meet in the according rooms at 3:15 p.m. Check the Fort Lee Athletics Page for the appropriate place to sign-up.
