The Week in Sports: a Look Back and a Look Ahead

The girls golf team and boys tennis team enjoyed undefeated weeks for Fort Lee.

From baseball to golf, softball, spring track and tennis, here is the latest news in Fort Lee sports:

  • Baseball: The baseball team open the week Monday night with a 10-1 loss against Westwood. The Bridgemen were then postponed from playing Manchester Regional on Wednesday before returning to action on Friday with an 11-1 rout of Dwight Morrow on the road. Fort Lee then lost the last game of the week Saturday against Bergenfield 6-1 despite outhitting the opposition.  The Bridgemen have four more games this week as they play at Lakeland on Monday, host Manchester Regional on Tuesday and play Mahwah at home on Wednesday. All of those games begin at 4:15 p.m. Fort Lee will then have a pair of days off before Bogota drives in for an 11 a.m. game Saturday morning.
  • Golf: The Lady Bridgemen golf team continued play with another undefeated week at Overpeck County Golf Course and four more victories. Fort Lee defeated Pascack Hills (240-266) on Monday behind senior Sarah Wi’s 45. The Lady Bridgemen then narrowly won through the rain on Wednesday in a shortened five-hole match over Westwood (148-156). On Thursday, the girls also beat both Passaic Tech (236-279) and Ridgefefield Memorial (236-280). Wi’s 50 led all players as the Lady Bridgemen improve to 8-1 on the season. After a cancellation of an upcoming match against Tenafly this week, the Lady Bridgemen are only scheduled to play Ramsey on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. start at Valleybrook.
  • Softball: The Fort Lee softball team finished 2-1 this week as the girls lost to Westwood on Monday, 5-3, and their Wednesday game against Elmwood Park was subsequently cancelled. The Lady Bridgemen rebounded with a 9-5 victory on Friday over New Milford and a 10-0 mercy rule-inducing drubbing of Lodi on Saturday. Freshman pitcher Amanda Maldonado allowed just three hits and recorded a total of eight strikeouts in the final victory of the week against the Lady Rams. Fort Lee is now 6-2-1 this season with another set of games coming up this week. The Lady Bridgemen will host Lakeland  Monday at 4:15 p.m. before traveling to play Mahwah at the same time on Wednesday. Fort Lee concludes the week with a Thursday game at McNair-Academic. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
  • Track: The Fort Lee co-ed track team hosted Cliffside Park on Monday as the Lady Bridgemen won 100-27 but the Fort Lee boys lost 78-62. The group also competed over the weekend in the Bergen County Relays at River Dell on Saturday. The spring track team will visit Dwight Morrow on Tuesday at 4 p.m. this week as well as competing in the Highlander Invitational on Saturday.
  • Tennis: Like the girls golf team, the Fort Lee boys tennis team also had an undefeated week. The Bridgemen took to the courts on Monday to take on Westwood and won 4-1 as their only loss came in the third singles match. Fort Lee was then postponed on Tuesday at Cliffside Park, before sweeping Dwight Morrow on Friday 5-0. The highlight of the match was a three-set tiebreak win by senior Henry Huang against Sean Chen 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3). The Bridgemen have yet to lose this season, posting a 3-0 record thus far. Fort Lee will look to continue its winning ways this week with only one scheduled match. After a postponement on Monday at Lakeland, the lone competition will take place on Wednesday against Mahwah at 4:15 p.m.
