The Week in Sports: a Look Back and a Look Ahead

Fort Lee Softball falls in the county tournament; The Bridgemen tennis team remains undefeated.

From baseball to golf, softball, spring track and tennis, here is the latest news in Fort Lee sports:

  • BASEBALL – The Bridgemen began the week with a 5-2 road loss to Westwood Monday. The losing streak continued on Tuesday for Fort Lee when a visiting Bogota bunch rallied for a pair of runs in the final inning of a 5-4 win. The Bridgemen then had some late-inning drama Wednesday, when they would return the favor to Dwight Morrow, as Fort Lee won 10-9 in 8 innings. Friday’s game at Ridgefield Park resulted in an 8-1 loss, and on Saturday the Bridgemen also fell at the hands of Kennedy High School 6-3. Coming up, the Bridgemen will host Dumont on Monday at 4 p.m. and then travel to play Arts High School on Thursday at 7 p.m. Fort Lee concludes the week by playing at Tenafly at 4 p.m. on Friday.
  • GOLF – The Lady Bridgemen started the week with a Tuesday loss against Paramus, 224-241. Senior Sarah Wi led Fort Lee at Paramus Golf Course with a 48. Fort Lee was then cancelled from playing Immaculate Heart Academy on Thursday and looks forward to three more competitions this week. They will play four teams including Pascack Hills on Monday 4 p.m. at Rockleigh Country Club), Northern Highlands on Wednesday (4 p.m. at Rockleigh Country Club) and then Westwood and Ramsey on Friday (4 p.m. at TBA).
  • SOFTBALL – The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen competed in the on Monday and won a 14-0 mercy-rule shortened game (5 innings) against Westwood. Fort Lee followed that up with another shutout, beating Arts High School 10-0 in another mercy rule affair on Tuesday. But on Saturday, it was Fort Lee on the opposite end of a 10-0 score against Rutherford in 5 innings. The loss knocks the Lady Bridgemen out of the Bergen County Softball Tournament. They now look for revenge on Monday in a rematch at Dumont beginning at 4 p.m. Fort Lee then faces Tenafly at home on Friday starting at 4:15 p.m. and visits Dwight Englewood on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
  • SPRING TRACK – Fort Lee had an unusual week, as both of their team meets did not take place. A competition against Westwood was postponed on Monday and then a possible make-up was cancelled on Tuesday as well. The team did compete at the Twin Boro Relays on Saturday in Ramsey. The girls team finished 3rd in the 4 x 800 relays with a time of 10:24.6 as the boys narrowly finished 2nd to Ramsey in the 3 x 400m IH by one tenth of a second at 3:05.0. Up next, Fort Lee will have an away meet at Ridgefield Park on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before a Thursday meet at home vs. Westwood and the County Seat Relays on Saturday. 
  • TENNIS – The Bridgemen had their highest number of opponents this week but remained undefeated at 7-0. Fort Lee first swept Westwood on Monday 5-0, as senior Peter Chin won his second singles match 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker. Fort Lee also beat Dwight Morrow on Wednesday 4-1 as the doubles duo of juniors Andrew Lee and Yuki Takahashi swept their competition 6-0, 6-0. The Bridgemen then defeated Cliffside Park on Friday 5-0 behind , who remains undefeated this season as well with another victory 6-2, 6-1. Fort Lee now has three more matches this week starting at Cliffside Park on Monday (4:00 p.m.) and then a road-trip to Lakeland on Tuesday (4:15 p.m.). That all leads up to the rematch against the Bridgemen’s rival Tenafly on Friday. It is expected to be a match-up between two undefeated teams beginning at 4 p.m. at Tenafly.
