The Week in Sports: Look Back and a Look Ahead

The Fort Lee boys tennis team remains undefeated. Four separate Bridgemen teams will play Westwood on Monday.

From baseball to golf, softball, spring track and tennis, here is the latest news in Fort Lee sports:

  • BASEBALL – The Bridgemen started the week on Monday with an 11-0 loss at Lakeland and then rebounded on Tuesday to beat Manchester Regional at home 16-6. Both games were shortened by the mercy rule and only lasted five innings. Senior John Hroncic earned the win on Tuesday, and the senior improved to 3-1 so far this season. Fort Lee then lost to Mahwah 10-5 on Wednesday and was rained out on Saturday against Bogota. This week, the Bridgemen host Westwood on Monday at 4 p.m. and then visit Bogota in a make-up game for a rare 11 a.m. start on Tuesday. Fort Lee is then back at home Wednesday to play Dwight Morrow at 4:15 p.m. before concluding the week on Friday at Ridgefield Park at 4 p.m.  The team is currently 4-8.
  • GOLF – The Lady Bridgemen started the week with only one loss on the season but suffered two more this week. Fort Lee was defeated on Tuesday by Ramsey (215-247) as senior Sarah Wi was the low scorer with a 45. The team then split a Thursday dual competition against Ramapo (loss 232-249) and Ridgefield (win 249-282). The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen are now 9-3 this season as they face two more opponents this week in Paramus on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Paramus Golf Course and Immaculate Heart Academy on Thursday (TBA at Valleybrook Golf Course).
  • SOFTBALL – The Fort Lee Lady Bridgemen finished the week with one win and one loss. The girls lost to Lakeland 5-1 on Monday as the team was held to just one hit. Fort Lee then played Mahwah on Wednesday in a see-saw, extra-inning affair. The Lady Bridgemen won 8-5 as Athlete of the Week Brianna Mattessich recorded the game-winning hit. The senior third baseman tripled home three runs in the top of the eighth inning, and freshman pitcher Amanda Maldonado held Mahwah scoreless in the bottom half for the win. The Lady Bridgemen return to action on Monday with a home game against Westwood and then a road game at Arts High School on Tuesday. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. with the team the rest of the week off.
  • SPRING TRACK – Fort Lee competed in the only meet of the week on Tuesday afternoon at Dwight Morrow. The boys won 83-39 as juniors Jenya Dyagiley and YuYu Fahmy scored 16 points each. The Bridgemen improved to 2-1 this season with the victory. The girls track team also defeated Dwight Morrow 81-40. Both the boys and girls teams face another quiet week with just one meet planned for Monday against Westwood. The events will start at 4 p.m. at Fort Lee High School.
  • TENNIS – The boys tennis team only had one match this week after a competition against Lakeland was postponed on Monday. But the Bridgemen did make the best of their week, staying undefeated at 4-0, and sweeping Mahwah on Wednesday. Senior Jason Halpern won first singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Neither team saw a third set all afternoon as Fort Lee enters a more challenging week. Fort Lee plays at Westwood on Monday and hosts Dwight Morrow on Wednesday. Both matches will begin at 4:15 p.m. including a possible matchup of undefeated teams on Wednesday. Fort Lee ends the week at rival Ridgefield on Friday beginning at 4 p.m.
