Season in Review: The Lady Bridgemen Golf Team

The team had a successful season and will look to continue the success next season.

It was a season of change for head coach Bob Ciccone and the Lady Bridgemen golf team, in large part because there was no season for the boys. It was a season that saw a group of girls  join together to create the first full year of girls varsity golf at Fort Lee High School, and it was a successful learning experience for all involved.

“Going into the season, I had no idea what to expect," said Ciccone. "I figured we would be competitive after last year playing against the boys and finishing 13-16, I thought we would be able to compete. Also going from match play to stroke play was an adjustment.”

The team finished with a record of 14-7, and senior Sarah Wi came up huge for Fort Lee this season, becoming the low scorer in every match played and a four year first team all league player. Wi’s sister will be joining the team next year as a freshman along with returning players Monica Hong, Alice Ji and Boram Choi.

Given the circumstances of the season and the adjustment period, things went quite well for the Lady Bridgemen, but the season certainly had its ups and downs.

“The best moment of the season was probably actually starting a full girls schedule and being able to compete," said Ciccone. "Toughest loss or moment was the loss to Bergen Tech the second time around. After losing the first time by close to 30 strokes, the second time we lost by one stroke.”

A team that definitely presented a challenge for Fort Lee was Ramsey High School, who handed the Lady Bridgemen their only two league losses of the season.

There were also big victories that came with the season, two of them being against the Lady Cardinals of Westwood, who were also in the midst of their first full season of girls varsity golf. Fort Lee won both matches by seven strokes.

With the loss of Sarah Wi to graduation, it will be interesting to see how next season plays out for the Lady Bridgemen. Monica Hong, Alice Ji and Boram Choi will definitely have to make up for the loss of Wi, but they should be up to the challenge.

As far as this season goes, it was a mostly successful campaign, and 14-7 is definitely not a record to be disappointed about.

Stay tuned next season for more Fort Lee girls varsity golf.
