Roundup: The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen sports teams.

Football

The Bridgemen fell to 0-2 after a 25-12 home loss to Ridgefield Park on Friday night. The Bridgemen looked good, but the Scarlets' offensive power took over in the second half. Fort Lee head coach Billy Straub is excited for their next challenge on Saturday at Cliffside Park at 1 p.m.

On Monday, the Bridgemen hosted Cliffside Park High School in a close matchup. The game ended in a 3-3 tie after the Bridgemen gave away a 3-0 lead. Fort Lee bounced back on Wednesday afternoon when they defeated a talented Ridgefield Park team after falling behind 1-0 at halftime. Senior Nikola Gogic scored a goal with 1:23 left in the game to give the Bridgemen the lead for good. The Bridgemen carried their success into Friday when they defeated Dumont at home 3-0. Sophomore Alessio Guacci scored with an assist from freshman Ryo Sugawara, senior captain Nikola Gogic scored with an assist from junior Cody Elkechen and senior Chris Reyes scored with an assist from Yu Yu Fahmy. Junior goalkeeper Matt Hernandez had four saves on the day as Fort Lee improved to 2-1-1. They will return to action on Monday when they visit the Westwood Cardinals at 4:15 p.m.

The Lady Bridgemen had an impressive 2-1 victory at Cliffside Park on Tuesday afternoon. Fort Lee goal scorers included seniors Jillian Scrivanich and Natalie Mateus. Fort Lee continued their solid play on Thursday when they defeated Ridgefield Park 3-0 at home. Senior Jillian Scrivanich, sophomore Caitlin McKenna and sophomore Ashley Jeng all scored for the Lady Bridgemen. The team will return to action  Tuesday when they visit Dumont High School at 4:15 p.m.

Girl’s Volleyball

The Lady Bridgemen defeated Cliffside Park on the road in an important match Monday afternoon. Fort Lee ended up sweeping the match with a clean 2-0 victory away from home. The set scores were 25-11 and 25-23. Setter Nicolette Pappas had 14 assists, outside hitter Megan Gimson had six kills and setter and defensive specialist Natsumi Ikeda had four aces. On Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Bridgemen lost 2-0 to their talented rival Ridgefield Park. The set scores were 24-26 and 20-25. During that match, Nicolette Pappas had 12 assists, outside hitter Defne Guvnec recorded two aces, outside/middle hitter Stephanie Nihamin had eight kills, middle hitter Anthe Nikolaidis had five kills, and Nicole Farber, the team’s Libero, had six digs. The team finished the week with a record of 3-2 after a 2-1 loss at Dumont. The Lady Bridgemen won the first set 25-14, and then lost the last two by scores of 22-25 and 20-25. The girls will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Westwood at 4:15 p.m.

Girls Tennis

The team hosted Ridgefield Park on Monday afternoon and came out with a 5-0 victory to improve their record to 2-0. Second singles player Natalie Shapnik defeated her opponent 6-1 in both sets. Head coach Sheri Steckler was pleased with the week the team had.

“I was thrilled with my second doubles and second singles players," Steckler said. "They look like they’re going to have a very promising season.”

The team returns to action Sunday in a tournament at Ramapo College.

Cross Country

On Tuesday the girls cross country team endured a heartbreaker as they fell to Ridgefield Park High School at their meet at Garrett Mountain. Junior Christina Ramirez led the way for the Lady Bridgemen finishing in third place with a time of 23:346. Sophomore Melanie Plattner was not too far behind, finishing in fourth place with a time of 23:54.

On the boys' side, the team had a perfect score and defeated Dwight Morrow High School at Darlington Park. Senior Jenya Dyailev finished  first with a time of 18:15, and senior Yuki Takahashi finished second with a time of 18:37.

On Friday, the Fort Lee girls XC team placed in a cross country invitational. The team finished in third place at Darlington Park with 125 points. The boys finished in fifth place and were only seven points away from finishing in third.

The teams return to action against Cliffside Park at 4:55 p.m. on Tuesday.
