Roundup: The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen sports teams.

Baseball:

The Bridgemen saw games scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday all get cancelled due to the weather, but they took on Queen of Peace Friday and got the win by a score of 8-7 in an 8-inning showdown, improving to 10-15 on the season. Nick Gogic hit a solo home run and Justin Parra got the win on the mound, improving his own record to 2-1. Pedro Lopez went 5-5 at the plate. The Fort Lee Baseball team will be entering the North 2 Group 2 State Tournament as the number 15 seed and will travel to West Essex High School Monday for the first round, which will starts at 4:00 p.m.

On Monday morning, the Big North Conference Tournament started at the River Vale Country Club. Sarah Wi finished in eighth place, shooting a 101. The eighth place finish topped her finish last Thursday in the County Tournament, where she finished in 12th. The tournament was the last of girls' golf action for the Lady Bridgemen this season.

Softball:

The Fort Lee softball team saw all of their games scheduled earlier in the week cancelled due to rain. The Lady Bridgemen will host Hackettstown High School Tuesday at 4 p.m. for the first round of the North 2 Group 2 State Tournament. The Lady Bridgemen enter the tournament as the number six seed.

Tennis:

The tennis team started off the week with cancellations of their own but found an indoor location at Fairfield Racket Club in Fairfield, NJ. The Bridgemen defeated West Essex in a 5-0 sweep in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA Tournament for Section 2, Group 2.  In singles competition, Jason Halpern defeated David Shields in two sets, Peter Chin defeated Chris Martin in three sets and Henry Huang defeated Alex Schwartz in two sets. In doubles action, Andrew Lee and Yuki Takahashi defeated Jared Ingoglia and Matthew Iannatone, while athletes of the week Max LeBlanc and Nichols Wong defeated Jim Fiore and Amol Kaluskar. On Thursday, the Bridgemen fell to James Caldwell High School by a narrow margin, 3-2. The Doubles teams of Lee and Takahashi and Wong and LeBlanc picked up the wins for the Bridgemen. On Saturday, Lee and Takahashi were eliminated from counties with a 5-7, 4-6 loss to Ramapo in the semifinals. The season has now concluded for the Fort Lee tennis team.

 Spring Track:

The Bergen County Championship took place Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Ashley Jenq placed sixth out of 26 competitors in the 100 meter dash, and senior Nancie Sophias finished 10th out of 26 competitors in the 400 meters. On Saturday, Melanie Plattner finished 17th, Christina Ramirez finished 19th and Hannah Cirone finished 21st in the 800 meter race out of 26 competitors. For the boys, Jenya Dyagilev placed fifth in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles and also finished sixth in the 400 meters. Maaru Yamaguchi placed sixth in the 100 meter dash and the 4 x 400 meter relay, which included  juniors Jenya Dyagilev, Frankie Goris and YuYu Fahmy and sophomore Sam Topaz, finished in sixth place. The Bridgemen finished in 11th place in their division out of 16 teams that competed. The schedule for next week has yet to be announced but state sectionals, the state group meet and the Bergen County Meet of Champions are on the horizon for the Fort Lee track teams.
