Roundup: The Week in Sports and a Look Ahead

How was your week? This is how the week went for the Bridgemen and Lady Bridgemen.

Baseball

The Bridgemen started off the week on Monday with a 12-2 loss at home against Dumont, the top team in their league. That loss did not discourage them though, as they bounced back against the Arts Academy with a lopsided 16-2 victory. Friday was an even more important day for the club as they defeated Tenafly on the road by a score of 8-4, which put the team back into state contention. Strong pitching by Nick Gogic and John Hrconcic was crucial as Gogic had a strong six innings, allowing 4 runs, and then Hrconic sealed the deal and struck out his cousin for the final out and the save. Hrconic also with the bat, contributing an important 2-run homer. The Bridgemen capped off the week on saturday afternoon when they went to Wood-Ridge High School and won a slugfest by the score of 12-10. Next week, the Bridgemen will be busy as they host Cliffside Park on Monday and host River Dell High School on Wednesday. They close out the week on Thursday, when they host Community High School. All games are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Golf

On Monday, girl’s golf went to Pascack Hills and finished with a score of 254, while Bergen Tech finished with 224 and host Pascack Hills finished with 290. Sarah Wi shot an impressive 47. The team returned to action on Tuesday, when they visited Ridgefield Park and picked up a nice win with a score of 236, while Ridgefield Park finished with 293. Wi continued her impressive play by shooting a season low 43.  Wednesday’s scheduled match at Northern Highlands was cancelled due to inclement weather. On Friday, the Lady Bridgmen lost at Ramsey, 246-217. Their record is now 14-6. Next week, the Lady Bridgemen will play a match against the Bergen Vocational School at 4 p.m. on Monday May.

Softball

The Lady Bridgemen started off the week on a high note with an 8-3 win at Dumont, who were previously undefeated in the league. The team stayed strong as they took an early lead against Tenafly and finished the job with a 5-3 win at home. The team then went on to beat Dwight Englewood Saturday afternoon at home by a score of 9-1. Nikki Farber and Brianna Mattessich each had home runs in that contest. Next week, they take on Cliffside Park on the road on Monday May at 4 p.m. before heading back home on Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. first pitch against Hawthorne High School. The Lady Bridgemen will continue their hectic schedule on Wednesday, when they travel to River Dell at 4 p.m. and finish up the week at home on Thursday at 4 p.m. against Ridgefield Parkl.

 Tennis

The Bridgemen kept their undefeated streak alive on Monday with a 5-0 sweep at home against Cliffside Park. All singles and doubles players on the Fort Lee team defeated their competition in two sets. On Tuesday, the team defeated Lakeland to improve to 9-0 on the season, but the streak ended on Friday afternoon when the Bridgemen were defeated by a strong Tenafly team. The doubles team of Andrew Lee and Yuki Takahashi stayed undefeated for the year and were the only Fort Lee team members to pick up a win in the 4-1 loss. The tennis team will return to action on Monday at home against Cliffside Park and then host River Dell High School on Wednesday. Both matches are slated to start at 4 p.m.

Spring Track

The track week kicked off on Tuesday with a Dual meet at Ridgefield Park High School. The boys and the girls teams both lost. The boys lost 93-47. Junior “YuYu" Fhamy and Sophomore Masaru Yamaguchi led the team in points scored and events won. The girls lost to Ridgefield Park by a score of 78-60. Thursday, Westwood was the site of the next dual meet. The girls ended up losing 81-40, while the boys picked up a close victory by the score of 70-69. Junior Jenya Dyagilev finished first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.80 and the 400 yard dash with a time of 52.6. YuYu Fhamy also won the 1600 meter run, the 800 meter run and the 3200 meter run. The County Seat Invitational was held at Ramsey, where about 40 schools competed. Runners of all levels competed, including freshman, novice and varsity level athletes. Ashley Jenq finished second in the 100 meter dash, while Anna Cervone and Hannah Circone finished second in their 1600 meter runs. The 4x8 relay team finished fourth. Nancy Sophias ran her best time to date in the 800 meters with a 2.22, finishing third. Julie Lau ran a 63.4 second 400 meters, and Christina Ramirez and Melanie Plattner finished third and fourth respectively in the 800 meters. The team won a total of 15 medals and placed in almost every event. The boys team also faired very well at the meet. The team finished in third place in the Varsity B Division with 34 points. Sam Topaz finished finished first in the 800 meter run at the novice  level. Taichi Aritomo finished in first place in the 400 meter hurdles at the novice level and Masaru Yamaguchi also finished first in the 100 meter dash  at the novice level. Jenya Dyagilev, Dan Koch,Frankie Goris, Chris Ashman,  Karan Rana, YuYu Fahmy and Joey Padin also had standout performances in what Coach Ed Garrison called, "the strongest outing for the boys team at a major meet this season."  

The next meet is  the Big North Division 7 American Division Championship on Friday.
