Thursday Final Night For Girls Rec Basketball League Signups

The Fort Lee Girls' Recreation Basketball League, which had more than 260 players last season, is looking for even more this year, with late registration taking place Wednesday and Thursday this week at the Fort Lee Community Center.

The next two days mark the last chance girls can register for the Fort Lee Girls Recreation Basketball League, president Michael Klein of the youth league announced.

Klein says he’s “still seeking” six girls for the league’s 3/4th grade division, 12 girls for the 5/6th grade division and 11 girls for the 7/8th grade division in order to hit his projected numbers for the season.

Klein said he’s also still in need of three assistant coaches and one head coach for the 3/4th grade division.

Klein previously described getting third graders interested in the sport as his “biggest challenge each year.”

“It is their first year joining the league, and most girls are apprehensive to start a new sport they never tried before,” he said. “But once they start, most play until the eighth grade and hopefully at the high school level.”

Late registration for the Fort Lee Girls Recreation Basketball League takes place Wednesday, Oct. 24 and Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Fort Lee Community Center from 7 to 9 p.m.

Klein also reminded parents of children pre-registered for the league of the following tryout dates:

  • Monday, Nov. 12 - 3/4th grade: 7-8 p.m.
  • Monday, Nov. 12 - 5/6th grade: 8-9 p.m.
  • Monday, Nov. 19 - 7/8th grade: 7-9 p.m.

All players are required to arrive 15 minutes early to check in at the front table and to wear sneakers, shorts or sweats but no jewelry and have their hair tied back. All girls must participate in tryouts to be placed on a team.
