Girls Recreation Basketball League Set to Open 2014 Season

Opening ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis F. Cole Middle School Gym.

The Fort Lee Girls Recreation Basketball League is about ready to tip off its season with a record 279 girls signed up to play.

The opening ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis F. Cole Middle School Gym.

The coaches, team members, and team sponsors are expected, as is League President Michael Klein and Mayor Mark Sokolich, who has traditionally tossed up the ceremonial opening tip off to begin the season.

The teams' sponsors - mostly businesses in Fort Lee and the surrounding towns - are longstanding supporters of the league, Klein said. The money goes to T-shirts for the players, screened with the company's logo.

Each year, too, the league provides the players with special giveaways. "This year car magnets will be given to attendees," Klein said.

The first game is set for 7 p.m. at the third- and fourth-rade level followed by three other games.

"Historically, the event has been a huge crowd pleaser," Klein said. "It’s so great to see the community come together to support the program."

For more information, visit the league's website, FortLeeGirlsBasketball.com. The site is complete with schedules, standings, game results, stats, sponsorship listings, contact info, and team rosters, Klein said.
